Paper & Paperboard Packaging

This document provides an overview of paper and paperboard packaging. It discusses the different levels of packaging that paper and paperboard can be used for, including primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. The document then covers the production process of paper and paperboard, including the sources of cellulose fiber, pulping methods, papermaking processes, and how the final paper properties are determined. It also discusses different paperboard constructions that are commonly used for packaging like corrugated board boxes.

PAPER
Deni/on
maGed or felted sheet usually composed of plant
bres
paper has been commercially made from such
bre sources as :
Rags (linen)
Baggase (sugar cane)
CoGon
Straw

modern paper is almost exclusively made from

cellulose bres derived from wood

TERMINOLOGY
Paperboard = boxboard = cardboard = carton
board describes a heavier paper stock
Paper and paperboard are non-specic terms
that can be related to either material caliper
(thickness) or grammage (basis weight)
ISO (Interna/onal Standards Organisa/on)
Paperboard = paper with a basis weight > 250 g/m2

General U.S. prac/ce

Paperboard = paper with thickness > 300 m

Variability of Paper
Paper is not a homogeneous material
Varies in the machine direc/on (MD), cross
direc/on (CD), Z-direc/on, and over /me
It is also reac/ve to changes in its
environment. Shrinks and expands usually not
uniformly
Its structure depends on the process that
produces it and even the loca/on across the
width of the paper machine

Physical proper/es of paper or paperboard

such as tear strength, burst strength, fold
ability and s/ness increase as brelength
increases

Long bres produces paper with

propor/onately higher
tensile strength
tear strength
fold strength
puncture strength

a rougher surface texture

varia/on in density due to poor forma/on that
can lead to
Uneven ink adsorp/on during prin/ng
Erra/c adhesive bonding

Short bres produces paper with

a smoother surface, and
signicantly reduced physical proper/es
compared to long bres

Recycled bres will have proper/es

inherited from the original bres source, but
with the provision that every re-pulping process
degrades and reduces bre length, thus
signicantly reduced physical proper/es
compared to long bres, and
aected by extraneous contaminants such as
water insoluble ahdesives
plas/c debris
non-removable prin/ng inks
