Morse Student Survey Analysis

Laura Morse distributed surveys to 66 students across three levels of English 11. She analyzed the results, finding that students perceive her knowledge of the subject matter positively but think she could improve classroom management and making lessons more fun. To improve, she will set clearer expectations and routines, use positive reinforcement, consult her collaborative teacher more, and employ attention-getting teaching methods.

Student Satisfaction Analysis Date Given: 11/3/16

1. Demographics: Describe your survey population by listing specific demographics.
Demographics should include race, gender, English Language Learners, and Special
Education students (IEPs and 504s). List specific disabilities.
I administered the survey to three levels of English 11: academic, general and honors.
The honors class is roughly an even split between genders. In that class, there is one
English Language Learner. There are five black students, one hispanic student, and the
rest (18 students) are white. Around sixty percent of the students in that class have
IEPs or 504s. In the general class, there are around 23 boys and five girls. There are
three black students. The rest are white. There are two students with case managers. I
know one has a 504. The other has a learning disability. In the honors class, there are
21 girls and 4 boys. There are two black students. The rest are white. There are three
students listed as gifted. One student has an RTI for testing.
2. Influencing Factors: List factors that might have influenced the results gathered on the
surveys (e.g., recent disciplinary actions, end of a long testing day, or confusion over a
question).
had just taken a quiz
did not already have chromebooks out (bothered by the task)
had testing the day before
classroom management confusion
3. Analysis: Analyze your survey responses and answer the following questions. Please
highlight the strengths and weaknesses pertinent to each question.
a. How do students perceive your knowledge of the subject matter? Explain your
answers based on data from your survey.
a. My students think I have a strong grasp on the content. 44 out of 66
students said they strongly agree with the statement: My teacher knows
and understands the subject being taught. Then 17/66 students ranked
my knowledge at a 4 out of 5.
b. How do students perceive your pedagogical knowledge? Explain your answer
based on data from your survey.

a. I think my students feel like I am a good teacher. One student left me a

comment that he/she would like to see more activities and more fun.
However, I believe that my students have shown me that they can see I
am trying. For example, 52 out of 66 students felt like I gave them the
purpose of the lesson (4s and 5s). 54 out of 66 (4s and 5s) felt that I use
different materials and activities to help them learn. 60 (4s and 5s) felt like
I related content to real world examples. 56 (4s and 5s) felt like I gave
clear instructions. Lastly, 53/66 gave me a 4 or 5 agreeing that I make
things easy to understand.
c. Do students perceive you as a caring and effective teacher? Explain your
answer based on the responses received from the survey.
a. I think most would say I am a caring and effective teacher. For example,
52/66 students strongly agreed that I treat everyone fairly. Additionally,
48/66 strongly agreed that I encourage each student to learn, and 35/66
strongly agreed that I provide productive feedback. There are some
outliers, but I think most agree.
d. Based on the student responses, what areas do you need to improve? Give
examples.
a. Confidence. One student wrote, don't be afraid to tell kids to be quiet. be
bold, and dont let them take advantage of you. I also had a comment
about how I play with my hair-- my nervous habit!
b. Classroom management. One of my students left the comment: She
needs to Take control of class better, and not be so quiet. Another said,
when people talk, get their attention, raise your voice, be direct.
c. Making it fun. One student wrote, Don't be afraid to have fun with the
class. Just make sure to not get off topic.
e. What steps will you take to improve your performance? Please give examples
of evidence based practices you will use to improve planning, instruction,
classroom environment, student-teacher interactions, etc.
When it is my classroom, I will set more behavior and classroom routines and
expectations so that students know what they should and should not be doing.
To go along with that, I would also set up a positive reinforcement program that
rewards students for doing what is asked.
I will talk with my collaborative (SPED) teacher more if I have one.
I will use attention getting methods early on, like power teaching or using sounds
or non-visuals like raising hands.
