Variable Design Point Method.

This spreadsheet allows calculating the wall thicknesses of a cylindrical tank based on the variable design point method. It was developed using API STANDARD 650, 11th Edition as a base. The spreadsheet requires filling in all yellow cells with data. It then calculates thickness values for the tank courses automatically based on relationships between height, radius, thickness and stress values, iterating calculations until values converge. The minimum thickness is chosen between calculated, minimum and bottom course values according to code requirements.

1- Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the nominal tank diameter shall be the
centerline diameter of the bottom shell-course plates.
2- Nominal plate thickness refers to the tank shell as constructed. The thickness specified
are based on erection requirements.
3- When specified by the purchaser , plate with a minimum nominal thickness of 6
millimeters may be substituted for 1/4-inch plate.
4- For diameters less than 15 m ( 50 ft ) but greater than 3.2 m ( 10.5 ft ) , the minimum
thickness of the lowest shell course only is increased to 6 mm ( 1/4" ).
5.6.1.3 The calculated stress for each shell course shall not be greater than the stress
permitted for the particular material used for the course. No shell course shall be thinner
than the course above it.
5.6.1.4 The tank shell shall be checked for stability against buckling from the design wind
speed in accordance with 5.9.7 . If required for stability , intermediate girders ,
increased shell-plate thickness , or both shall be used.

Item 5.6.4 Calculation of Thickness by the Variable-Design-Point Method.

5.6.4.1 Design by the variable-design-point method gives shell thickness at design points
that result in the calculated stresses being relatively close to the actual circumferential shell
stresses. This method may only be used when the Purchaser has not specified that the 1 foot method be used and when the following is true :In S.I. Units : ( L/H ) <= ( 1000/6 ) or in
U.S. Customary Units : ( L/H <= 2 ).
Has the Purchaser specified that the 1 - foot method be used ?
Yes or Not ?

Item 5.6.4.5. The following ratio shall be calculated for
the bottom course : h1 / (r t1 )0.5
h1 = height of the bottom shell course.
r = nominal tank radius.
t1 = calculated thickness of the bottom shell course,less
any thickness added for corrosion allowance ,used to
calculate t2 (design)- The calculated hydrostatic

If the value of the ratio is less than or equal to 1.375 :

t2 = t1

If the value of the ratio is greater than or equal to 2.625

t2 = t2a

If the value of the ratio is greater than 1.375 but less than 2.625 :
t2 = t2a + ( t1 - t2a ) * ( ( 2.1 - ( h / ( 1.25 * ( r * t1 )0.5))
t2 = minimum design thickness of the second shell course excluding any
corrosion allowance.
t2a =thickness of the second shell course ,as calculated for an upper
shell course as described in 5.6.4.6 to 5.6.4.8 , exclusive of any
corrosion allowance .dn calculating second shell course thickness ( t2 )
for design case and hydrostatic test case , applicable values of t2a and t1
shall be used.
Item 5.6.4.6 To calculate the upper-course thicknesses for both the design condition and the hydrostatic
test conditon, a preliminary value tu for the upper-course thickness shall be calculated using the formulas
in 5.6.3.2 excluding any corrosion allowance, and then the distance x of the variable design point from the
bottom of the course shall be calculated using the lowest value obtained from the following:

x1 = 0.61 * ( r * tu )0.5 + 320 C*H

x2 = 1000 * C * H
x3 = 1.22 * ( r * tu )0.5

S.I. Units

x1 = 0.61 * ( r * tu )0.5 + 3.84 C*H

x2 = 12 * C * H
x3 = 1.22 * ( r * tu )0.5

US Customary
units

tu = thickness of the upper course at the girth joint , exclusive of any

corrosion allowance.
C = ( K0.5 * ( K - 1 )) / ( 1 + K0.5 )
K = tl / tu
tl = thickness of the lower course at the girth joint , exclusive of any
corrosion allowance.
H = Design liquid level.
Item 5.6.4.7 The minimum thickness tx for the upper shell courses shall be calculated for both the design
condition (tdx) and the hydrostatic test condition (tx) using the minimum value of x obtained from 5.6.4.6 :

tdx =( (( 4.9*D)*(H - (x / 1000))*G) / Sd ) + CA

ttx = ((( 4.9*D*( H - (x / 1000)) / St

S.I. Units

tdx = ((( 2.6 * D)*(H - (x / 12))*G / Sd ) + CA

US Customary
Units.

ttx = ((( 2.6 * D) * ( H - ( x / 12 )) / St

Item 5.6.4.8 The steps described in 5.6.4.6 and 5.6.4.7 shall be repeated using the claculated value of tx
as tu until there is little difference between the calculated values of tx in succesion (repeating the steps
twice is normally sufficient ) . Repeating the steps provides a more exact location of the design point for
the course under consideration and, consequently , a more accuarate shell thickness.
