The Chit Chat

The document summarizes an observation of speaking patterns in an English-Arabic kindergarten classroom with 20 students. It notes that the most common reason for students speaking was repeating words or phrases after the teacher as a whole class. The least common reason was answering a partner in paired work. It was observed that the teacher spent about 20 minutes talking, which was deemed an appropriate amount of time. The use of Arabic language was also deemed appropriate given that English is not the students' first language and they only have English lessons twice a week for 15 minutes each.

Read the questions below and write your answers
What was the most common reason for speaking?
Learner repeats word / phrase after teacher whole class
What was the least common reason for speaking?
Learner answers a partner in paired work activity.
Were there any boxes with no ticks?
Yes, there were no learner answers a group member in group work activity.
How much of the lesson was spent on the teacher using Teacher Talk, in
your opinion?
In think, she spent 20 minutes.
Do you feel it was an appropriate amount of talk? Why / Why not?
I feel yes, because taking more time the teacher talk that lead students get bored and
not interact with teacher. For example, they will ask to go to bathroom or what time
we will leave?
What do you think is an appropriate sequence of interaction patterns?
Whole class, because I think as I observe that all students were listen to the teacher
and try repeat what she is saying. For example, when she asks them to repeat
number to after her they all response and repeat it by this she make sure all say it.
Now consider how much Arabic was used. Do you think it was used
appropriately?
Why? / Why not?
The both teacher of Arabic and English were using the Arabic language more than
English. Also, they just take English twice a week in 15 minutes so that why they
were not able to use English. In addition, they were taking English just from three
months and its not their first language.
