Data and Results of Experiment 3A

Experiment 3A examined the reaction of iron filings with hydrochloric acid and acetic acid. The reaction of iron filings with hydrochloric acid was faster, producing larger bubbles. When a flame was introduced, the gas produced a pop sound, indicating it was flammable hydrogen gas. In contrast, the reaction of iron filings with acetic acid was faster with smaller bubbles and no reaction with fire. The homogeneity and mixing of the reactants influences the reaction rate, with acid-base and salt forming reactions being faster than complex formation reactions.

CHEMICAL KINETICS

DATA AND RESULTS OF EXPERIMENT 3A

TABLE 3A: NATURE OF REACTANTS
3M HCl

1.3

grams Fe filings

-- Faster reaction
-- Big bubbles were formed
-- More Fe filings moves up
and down
--After a minute and 30
seconds, when we lit a fire,
it made a pop sound

3M CH3COOH

-- Fast reaction
-- Small bubbles were
formed
-- No reaction with fire
-- Fe filings sink

In order to react, molecules must come in contact with each other. The
more homogenous the mixture of reactants, the faster the molecules can
react. The homogeneity of the reactants also help dictate the rate of the
reaction, acid/base reactions, the formation of salts, and ion exchange are
fast reactions while complex formation reactions are slow. That is why, the
mixture of 3m HCl plus 0.3 grams Fe filings has greater reaction than the
mixture of 3M CH3COOH and 0.3 grams Fe filings.
EXPERIMENT 3A QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

1. In which test tube is the metal reacting more vigorously?

Answer: In the test tube where HCl is, the metal reacts more
vigorously.
2. Is the gas evolved flammable?
Answer: Yes
3. What is the chemical composition of the gas?
Answer: H2
4. What other product was produced in each test tube?
Answer: The other products that was produced in each test tubes were
FeCl2 and Fe(CH3CO2)2.
5. Write the chemical equation describing the reaction of Fe with each of
the acids.

Answer: Fe + 2HCl FeCl2+ H2and;

Fe + 2 CH3COOH Fe(CH3COO)2 + H2
