Self-Analysis Presentation 100 Points: Specifically
100 Points
Description: Each student will analyze a relationship(s) of theirs and their communication
flaws within the relationship(s). Each student must identify three different
communication weaknesses/flaws that exist within their relationship(s), why they believe
they keep falling into these patterns of behavior, and how theyre planning on changing
these behavior. Students must apply terms and concepts learned throughout the semester
to their self-analysis (so please refer to your textbook). Each student will submit a typed,
personalized outline of their analysis using the template provided.
To begin, ask yourself the following questions:
1. When it comes to how I communicate, what areas need the most improvement?
2. Who in my life is affected the most by my poor communication habits?
3. How do these poor communication habits affect my relationship?
4. What can I do differently in order to become more effective in this area?
Content Areas to Analyze:
Listening
Conflict
Language
Nonverbal Communication
Emotions
Self-Disclosure
Communication Climate
Self-Esteem/Self-Concept
Perception
Family Communication
Intimacy
Once you choose your three content areas to analyze, narrow your focus even more by
clearly identifying terms, concepts, and/or theories that best describe your
weakness/behavior. For example, maybe you choose listening as one of your three content
areas but you should ask yourself what specifically am I not doing well while trying to
listen? This is where various terms and concepts should be identified. Maybe youre most
guilty of psuedolistening or selective listening.
Keep in mind that you may have three areas of communication weaknesses with just one
person and therefore this is the relationship you will focus on for your entire analysis.
However, you may have different communication flaws with all different people and
therefore you may refer to three entirely different relationships in your analysis.
Here is the template for the outline. Please use this template while formatting your
self-analysis.

AVOID using generalized statements/solutions (i.e. if you suggest that
youre a poor listener and then you merely say I need to listen better)
