Purpose
The purpose of this procedure to introduce regular check of UT machines, probes &
DAC blocks to monitor the performance of UT machines and accessories. This
document is being generated with a view to set up a guideline for regular checks of
UT machines and accessories.
2.
Scope
The scope of this document covers regular checks of UT machines, normal/angle
beam probes and checking of reference dB of all piping DACs and is limited to
Reliance Projects.

Methodology
6.1
Checking For Probe
6.1.1
Check for Beam Index and Beam Angle of Angle Probe
Index point is a point of the angle beam probe through which central beam leaves the
angle beam probe and it is marked on the side face and front face of the probe. The
beam index point is a reference point for all calculation and scanning purpose. But
because of constant wear and tear of the Perspex, there is always a possibility that
the index point get shifted in either way. So the position of the index point required
to be checked at regular interval. This is done with the help of IIW V1 & V2 block.
First with the help of V2 block determine index point by maximizing echo and mark
that point. That point becomes the index point of the probe. Then with help of V1
block, direct the sound beam towards perspex and maximize the echo .Hold the
probe in that position. The angle determined from the V1 block, corresponds to the
index point of the probe becomes angle of the probe.
6.1.2
Check for Beam Index and Beam Angle of Perspex Shoe
For longitudinal scanning of below 6 inch dia. pipe we are using 5 mm dia. miniature
normal probe mounted on angle perspex shoe to match the profile of the pipe. The
procedure for checking beam index and beam angle shall be as per 6.1.1. These
check are to be carried out once in a week for each shoe.
6.1.3
Check for Range Calibration of Normal Probes
Range calibrations of normal probes are required to be done at regular interval. This
is to be done with the help V1/V2 block. First we set a range with the help of V1
block, cross verify the same against V2 block and vice versa.
6.1.4
Check for Range Calibration of T/R Probes
Range calibration of TR probes is required to be done at regular interval. This is to be
done with the help of multi-step thickness gage calibration block.

Check for Calibration of DAC
As we know DACs are the basis for UT scanning as well as acceptance and rejection.
Again DACs are plot based on reference dB. The reference dB is function of
combination of factors like probe angle, beam index point, condition of shoe (where
ever applicable) etc. As the probes are subject to constant wear and tear, its
reference dB may get change over a period of time. So it is necessary to have a
check on reference dB of each piping/structural block. If in any case it is found that
the variation of reference dB is more than 2 dB, the same DAC need to be discarded
and a fresh DAC need to be plotted in the machine. In an average each of our UT
machines store 25 to 30 piping DACs. On weekly basis 6 to 8 DACs can be verified
so that all the DACs are getting verified once in a month.
6.3
Check for Calibration of UT Machine
Calibration of UT machine to be checked for screen height linearity and amplitude
control linearity as mentioned in ASME section V.
