This lesson plan aims to teach students about Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day over the course of one hour. Students will learn about Columbus' voyage through a Brainpop video, reading of the book Encounter, and participating in a float and sink science activity. During the lesson, students will engage in interactive writing and respond to a writing prompt about what they learned about Columbus. To assess learning, students will take a quiz after the Brainpop video and teachers will evaluate students' participation in discussion and their written responses. The lesson also explores non-European perspectives and whether Columbus Day should be renamed Indigenous Peoples Day.
