configurationfileusedforinitialization(startup).TheconfigurationfilemustbeanASCIIfilelocatedineitherNVRAMorFlashmemory.

NoteWhenyouusethisglobalconfigurationcommand,youaffectonlytherunningconfiguration.Youmustsavetheenvironmentvariablesettingtoyour
startupconfigurationtoplacetheinformationunderROMmonitorcontrolandtohavetheenvironmentvariablefunctionasexpected.Usethecopy
system:runningconfignvram:startupconfigcommandtosavetheenvironmentvariablefromyourrunningconfigurationtoyourstartupconfiguration.
ThesoftwaredisplaysanerrormessageanddoesnotupdatetheCONFIG_FILEenvironmentvariableinthefollowingsituations:

Youspecifynvram:asthefilesystem,anditcontainsonlyadistilledversionoftheconfiguration.(Adistilledconfigurationisonethatdoesnotcontain
accesslists.)

Youspecifyaconfigurationfileinthefilenameargumentthatdoesnotexistorisnotvalid.

TherouterusestheNVRAMconfigurationduringinitializationwhentheCONFIG_FILEenvironmentvariabledoesnotexistorwhenitisnull(suchasat
firsttimestartup).IfthesoftwaredetectsaproblemwithNVRAMortheconfigurationitcontains,thedeviceenterssetupmode.Seethe"SetupCommand"
chapterinthispublicationformoreinformationonthesetupcommandfacility.
Whenyouusethenoformofthiscommand,therouterreturnstousingthedefaultNVRAMconfigurationfileasthestartupconfiguration.

Whenbootingfromanetworkserver,routersignoreroutinginformation,staticIProutes,andbridginginformation.Asaresult,intermediateroutersare
responsibleforhandlingFTP,rcp,orTFTPrequests.Beforebootingfromanetworkserver,verifythataserverisavailablebyusingthepingcommand.
