Exercise 3 PDF

This document contains 12 problems related to determining forces, reactions, and torques in mechanical systems involving trusses, frames, pulleys, gears, and other structures. The problems involve calculating forces in specific members, identifying which counter is acting, finding components of forces, determining wheel and connection reactions, and calculating forces and torques required to maintain equilibrium.

CL 305: Solid Mechanics

Exercise-3
1. A Pratt roof truss is loaded as shown. Determine the force in members CE, DE and DF.

2. The diagonal members in the centre panels of the power transmission line tower shown are
very slender and can act only in tension. For the given loading, determine which of the two
counters CJ and HE is acting and find the force in that counter.

3. For the frame and the loading shown, find the components of the force on member ABC.

4. Knowing that each pulley has a radius of 250 mm, determine the components of the
reactions at D and E.

5. The cab and motor units of the front end loader shown are connected by a vertical pin
located 2m behind the cab wheels. The distance from C to D is 1m. The centre of gravity of
the 300 motor unit is located at , while the centre of gravity of the 300 cab and
75 load are located respectively at and . Knowing that the machine is at rest with its
breaks released, determine (a) the reactions at each of the four wheels, (b) the forces exerted
on the motor unit at C and D.

6. The axis of the three-hinge arch ABC is a parabola with a vertex at B. Knowing that = 112

and = 140 , determine (a) the components of the reaction at A, (b) the components of
the force exerted at B on segment AB.

7. Four beams, each of length 2 are nailed together at their midpoints to form the support system

shown. Assuming that only vertical forces are exerted at the connections, determine the vertical
reactions at A, D, E and H
2

8. A press shown is used to emboss a small seal at E. Knowing that = 250 , determine (a) the

vertical component of the force exerted on the seal, (b) the reaction at A.

of magnitude 1.5 . is applied to the crank of the engine system shown.

9. A couple

For each of the two positions shown, determine the force required to hold the system in
equilibrium.

10. Rod CD is attached to the collar D and passes through the collar welded to end B of lever
required to hold the system in
AB. Neglecting the effect of friction, determine the couple
equilibrium when = 30 .

11. In using the bolt cutter shown, a worker applied two 300 forces to the handles, Determine
the magnitude of the forces exerted by the cutter on the bolt.

12. The gears D and G are rigidly attached to shafts that are held by frictionless bearings. If
0 that must be applied for equilibrium, (b)
= 90 and = 30 , determine (a) the couple
the reactions at A and B.
