Understand RS-232 communications interfacing and the use of a breakout box well enough to establish the proper cabling and termination setups. Although RS-232 interfacing is a general skill, an introduction will be taught as part of this module. EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: PCU cabinet with one set of PCU modules installed (NIS/NPM and MFP) ICIO1 hardware including @) one MMU and termination mounting space b) —_ICTO1, NIS, NKTUO1, NKLSO1, NTMFO1, NTCLOt ©) Coax or Twinax loop cables as appropriate for existing loop 10103 hardware including: @) one MMU and termination mounting space b) —_ICTO3, NIS, NKTUO1, NKLSO1, MPI01, NTMPO1, NTCLO1 ©) Coax or Twinax loop cables as appropriate for existing loop Breakout box Personal Computer with CAD text S232 cables: AT serial pig-tail, and 25 pin null modem cable DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS: 96-610 ICIO1/03 Instruction Manual RS232.ppt E96-827-3A SEM API for DOS ‘Training Module - CIU Hardware ‘O107197 lof 5 File: CIU-student. DOCElsag Bailey i moag Bae Service Development & Cet Handout: CIU Hardware Notes RS-232 Notes PREREQUISITES: Infi 90 Architecture 1, Cabinet Power Systems 1, NISINPM and MFP Hardware LESSON CONTENT: The documents should be provided to the student in advance. They should be read and the instructor should be prepared to answer any questions. The function of the CIU in the ‘system and its relationship with the PCU should be understood from the system architecture prerequisite, ‘Also the background for the wiring issues should be familiar from the power prerequisite. 1 ‘The instructor should point out the importance of proper power wiring, for example: a) The module common must be tied to the /O common. It should be pointed out that many CIUs are installed in mini-90s where this is not automatically done. b) —_In- mini 90s where no /O is supported such as a standalone CIU, the DC common can be connected to the cabinet. ©) _ PF and the monitoring of the PEP may not be supported in these cases so PFI should be tied to 5 volts through a 1 KOhm resistor. 2 Inthe case of adding to an existing cabinet, the considerations with the various communication channels and other system components should be reviewed. For example: a) The expander bus cannot be shared with an MFP or NPM or any other module since the NIS is a slave module to the ICT. b) Module bus may be shared in InfiNet type CIUs although this is not recommended. In plant loop CIUs it will not work at all. The newer MMUs make provisions for separating sections of the module bus. Discuss the visual indications of the CIU operation: @) __ Discuss LEDs on front panel of LIS and ICT. This includes the normal and the fault LED indications. b) The CIU does not come on line automatically like the PCU. It must be commanded to ‘come on the InfiNet by the computer. ©) Discuss the feedback expected on the workstation when trying to communicate with the IU. Demonstrate which menus are appropriate for the exercise. 4, Review the document on RS232. The student should be encouraged to educate himself more ‘thoroughly on the subject. It should be pointed out that most bookstores carry books on the subject since it is an industry standard. The instructor should demonstrate the use of the test equipment: Breakout box & DVM. The port configuration menu in TXTEWS should be ‘demonstrated so that the switch settings on the ICT will make sense. 5. Discuss the use of short haul modems for distance and for isolation. 6. _ Discuss indications for troubleshooting: Do the LEDs change on the front panel of the ICT? Is the ‘message on TXTEWS a time-out or a communication error. These could be clues as to whether there is a cabling versus software settings problem. 7. Discuss the diagnostic port. The idea here is not to go into detail on the use of the diagnostics but to show the meaning of the switches and how to activate the feature. Discuss the use of the ‘Training Module - CIU Hardware 01/0797 2of 5 File: C1U-student DOCMS Windows terminal_exe program to communicate with the port. Two commands will be used the lab so the purpose and options for the two should be explained: Command 19, CIU Restart, and Command 69, CIU Environment. 8 Discuss the ICI03 hardware including: Bailey oe Service Development & Certification Program and how that sets up block records in memory as opposed to an EWS which does not establish any tags. TAB ACTIVITIES: The lab isto install and start up an IGIOT. Success is to be able fo use the Computer with TXTEWS to communicate with a module in a PCU. In addition, the diagnostic port must be successfully accessed. A second lab exercise isto install and start up an ICI03. Success is to be able to restart the IC103 with and without the key protection installed. The student must know what factors ‘Training Module - CIU Hardware (01/07/97 30f 5 File: CIU-student DOC 2) Hardware settings and LED indications on the ICT and NIS I b) The MPIO1 ©) The TMPOT with emphasis on the jumper settings, J 4) SCSloption j ) The hardware key The firmware revisions prior to F.0 did not require a key. i) I F.0 or tater firmware is installed, a key is required the software must use the ‘SEM-API package to interact with it. i) To test only the hardware on an ICI03 with TXTEWS or some other non-SEM I ‘API software, a pre F.0 ICTO3 firmware is needed. . iv) Tottest the CIU hardware and the key, a program can be used from the DOS ‘SEM API disk. There is a program called ICICONF.EXE to configure the serial I port parameters of the computer, and another program to test the interface called TALK90.EXE. Not all the commands on the menu work, but command ; 100 is used first to establish the connection. This command checks for the key. Then commands 19 and 69 can be used as with the talk90 on the diagnostic port of the ICI01. CIU Reply code 200 says the key is not detected ¥) Sections 2 (Installation), 7 (Talk80), 9 (Troubleshooting) and Appendix M J (Termination Unit Settings for the Key) should be reviewed in the SEM API ‘manual for DOS. i 9 Discuss CIUs in Consoles 2) Communication channels, diagnostic ports, board styles for: J ) PCTICT for OIU and MCS i) PSTASTO1 for MCS+, 01820, 01840, O1S12, etc. I i) IS TO2 for MCS#, 01825, C1841, 42, 43 b) Discuss briefly the idea of a point database for a console or data acquisition computer‘Service Development & Certification Program “determine whether the Key is needed and how to test with and without it. 1 ‘The student is provided all the parts to install and configure an ICI01. This should be done with minimal guidance other than to tell the student where to install the CIU in terms of cabinet space. ‘There is no intent to provide a step by step procedure for doing this task. The instructor should provide the Loop and PCU address to be used. 2) An RS232 cable is to be provided that is the wrong pinout to communicate with the CIU ‘with normal dipshunt settings. This means a standard AT serial cable (8 to 25) and then a 25 to 25 pin null modem cable. The AT serial cable should be the short pig-tail type so that they will not just use it alone. This will force the student to use the breakout box to debug the interface. b) The Functions in TXTEWS of restarting the CIU and inspecting the PCU will be sufficient to determine the successful installation of the CIU. ©) _The port settings should be set to no handshaking initially and then set to enable hardware handshaking so that the student can observe the actions of the various lines on the breakout box. ) Use the terminal.exe program in MS Windows (or the Hperterm in Wing) to access the
