Bone Marrow Failure States

Bone marrow failure states refer to conditions where the bone marrow is unable to produce sufficient new blood cells. These include aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, pure red cell aplasia, myelophthisis, and pancytopenia. Clinical features include abrupt or insidious bleeding, weakness, shortness of breath, and infections due to low blood cell counts. Treatment options are bone marrow transplant, immunosuppression therapy, and supportive care. Myelodysplastic syndromes differ from aplastic anemia in that patients may also experience constitutional symptoms and have a higher risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia.
