VOCABULARY ENHANCEMENT
Read the passage below carefully.
At last there is now a special place in Kuala Lumpur where those who are interested in
astronomy can go to. The place? It is none other than the country's one and only National
Planetarium. It is located away in the greener part of the city, at Taman Tasik Perdana. The
Butterfly Park and the Orchid Garden are close by. This means that visitors can easily walk
over and spend some time at these two places as well. The planetarium was officially opened on
February 1994.
The planetarium is situated on a hill overlooking Kuala Lumpur. Visitors to it have to
make their way up a long flight of concrete steps. On reaching the top, you will find stone
chairs and tables where you can rest. Many find these ideal spots for picnics. The vast outdoor
area is clean and well maintained.
Adults have to pay RM 1.00 to enter the Exhibition Hall. Admission for children under12 years is free. There are all kinds of interesting exhibits inside. For example, visitors can
learn about how tides and waves are formed; why eclipses occur and also trace the history of
man's conquest of space. The video wall, with its twelve TV screens which show the Milky Way
and the nine planets, never fails to draw the attention of the visitors, especially the young. Science
fiction movies such as Star Trek are also screened in the Exhibition Hall.
Apart from the Exhibition Hall, another attraction is the Space Theatre. Here slide shows on
the development of space science through the ages are screened. 'From the Stonehenge to the
Satellites' is one such example. In this special theatre, visitors are treated to a journey into space
as they view the shooting stars streaking through the `sky'. The 'sky' is the dome-shaped screen
which is made of aluminum. Visitors have to sit reclined in their seats and look up into the 'sky'
to watch the shows. A ticket to the Planetarium Show is RM 3.00 for adults and RM 2.00 for
children.

I try to love my neighbour, wailed a friend, but I wish his dog would not howl all night.
I knew what she meant. We had charming neighbours once who would have been so easy to
love if their tom-cat had not kept bounding into our backyard and chasing our chicks.
When we tactfully broached the subject*, they said their cat was just high-spirited and did not
mean any harm. True enough, but our chicks did not understand this....
When one day the tom-cat went offas is the way with tom-catswe were overjoyed, but my
grandmother felt so guilty about being so happy that she baked a specially nice cake and made
me take it across to our neighbours.
However trying your neighbours may be, you must always keep on good terms with them,
Grandma used to say.
They are, in a way, closer to you than your relatives, she said. If you are taken ill suddenly, or spill
boiling water on yourself, or see a face at the window in the middle of the night, it is your neighbours
who will run to your rescue.
It is to them, too, that you turn when a dozen guests descend on you and you find you have run
out of sugar or onions or something.
That is why when you hold any kind of feast, your neighbours must be invited, said Grandma. In
fact, whenever you cook anything special, the neighbours 'within smelling distance' must be sent a
portion.
I must confess I used to wish sometimes we did not have so many neighbours within smelling,
seeing and hearing distance.
It can be quite upsetting to have the whole kampung know that you let your rice burn; that you hit
your brother in the most unlady-like fashion because he read out extracts from your diary and that
your mother told you off for not sweeping behind the doors and under the floor-mats....
Still, as my grandmother pointed out, it was better than living in some of these big towns
she had heard of, where you could die screaming in your bed and your neighbours just pulled their
blankets more snugly around them....
