EEE 309 Communication Theory: Instructor: Tishna Sabrina Summer 2016

This document summarizes key points from Lecture 4 of the EEE 309 Communication Theory course on demodulation of AM signals. It discusses three methods of demodulating an AM signal: coherent demodulation using a locally generated carrier, non-coherent rectifier detection which detects the envelope of the signal using a diode, and non-coherent envelope detection which uses an envelope detector circuit to extract the message signal by blocking the DC component with a capacitor. It also briefly introduces single sideband modulation as a way to reduce the bandwidth of an AM signal.

Demodulation of AM Signal

Like DSB-SC signals, the AM signal can be

demodulated coherently by a locally generated
carrier.
It does not take the advantage that the envelope
of the AM signal follows the message signal.
There are two types of non-coherent methods of
AM demodulation
Rectifier detection and
Envelope detection.

Envelope Detection of AM Signal

The dc term A can be blocked out by a capacitor or a simple RC high

pass filter.
The ripple may be reduced further by another LPF.
