Math This week we worked on multiplying decimals by powers of 10,
modeling decimal multiplication and multiplying a decimal by a whole
number. Keep working on those math facts! Theyre important.

Reading

Our story next week is Hold the Flag High. It is about a an

African American regiment in the Civil War. A Sergeant vowed to not
let Old Glory touch the ground. The reading skills that we will practice next week are sequencing and inferring.

Grammar Next week we will be

working on subject-verb agree-

ment within sentences.

Writing We finished our Tall Tales last week. Our mini unit that we

are in right now is on descriptive writing. Students were asked to

write a 1-2 paragraph piece on their favorite part of fall with a focus
on writing descriptively.

Spelling- Our list focuses on irregular plurals. Using our plural rules
from this week will help students memorize the spellings of these
words.

Social Studies We spent the week learning about Native American

groups by region. Students learned about the Desert Southwest,
Northwest Coast, Arctic, Plains and Eastern Woodland Indians. Next
week students will be introduced to a group research project on a particular tribe.

Science-We finished up our first unit this week. All three fifth grade

teachers decided we would not test over the unit since there were so
many lab grades and due to the fact that we are searching for a better assessment tool. We will be skipping Unit 2 for now and moving on
to Unit 3. Our next unit we moved on to is over space and the solar system. We will spend time getting to know more about our planets, the
moon, and the sun.

Note From the Teacher:

In an attempt to make learning fun, the fifth grade team has tried to incorporate more
themed days in the school year. Monday will be one of those days. Believe it or not, September 19 is
International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Yes, it does exist. :) The 5th grade teachers will be dressin up
in our finest pirate attire and we invite students to participate if they wish. We will be learning pirate vocabulary and incorporating all things pirate throughout our day. We will even be learning
about real pirates past and present. Dont worry..no one will have to walk the plank. :)
Parent-Teacher Conferences (A.K.A. Student-Led Conferences in 5th grade) will be Tuesday, October 11. I will be sending home paperwork within a week so that you can sign up for a time. Refer to
your calendar in the meantime to find what might work best for you that day. Time slots are first
come, first served! Remember, your child will be coming with you since it will be student-led.
