End Sem Control SYSTEMS2014paper

This document contains a 4 page examination for a control systems course. It includes 5 questions related to control systems topics like transfer functions, root locus analysis, stability analysis using Bode plots, and compensation techniques. The questions involve calculating transfer functions, analyzing stability properties, designing compensators, and explaining control systems concepts. END Semester Examination
Title of paper: Control systems
Time : 3 Hours
Maximum marks: 70
Paper Code: EC-314
MAY 2014
Note:
1) Attempt all five questions
2) Assume suitable missing data.
___________________________________________________________________
Question 1:

(Marks=6+8)

a) Find the overall transfer function(C/R):

Fig: 1(a)
b) Find the overall transfer function(C/R):

Fig: 1(b)

Question 2:

(Marks=7+7)

a) Prove with the help of the figure 2 that proportional plus derivative
controller adds damping to the system and thus permits the use of a
larger value of the gain K, which will result in an improvement in the
steady-state accuracy.

Fig:2
b) The maximum overshoot and the rise time, conflict with each other. In
other words, both the maximum overshoot and the rise time cannot be
made smaller simultaneously. If one of them is made smaller, the other
necessarily becomes larger. Justify the above statement with the help of
necessary transient parameters.
Question 3:

(Marks=14)

a) The pattern of the root loci depends only on the relative separation of
the open-loop poles and zeros. If the number of open-loop poles
exceeds the number of finite zeros by three or more, there is a value of
the gain K beyond which root loci enters the right-half S plane, and thus
the system can become unstable. Validate the above statement by
calculating the value of gain K at the instant where root loci enters the
right-half S plane by plotting the root locus plots separately for the
following transfer functions and comment about the results obtained
from the plot.

i)

ii)

Question 4:

(Marks=6+8)

a) The location of poles and zeros for a compensator (eg: Phase Lag) to
improve the steady state response are kept very near to the imaginary
axis while this is not the case during the improvement of transient state
response (eg: Phase lead compensator). Justify the above statement
with reference to the root locus plot.

b) The position control system is given by Open Loop Transfer Function

Design a compensator Gc(s) so that the dominant closed-loop poles

have the damping ratio of 0.5 and undamped natural frequency n = 3
rad/sec. Plot the root locus of both uncompensated system and
compensated system on the same graph paper.

Question 5:

(Marks=6+8)

a) Construct a bode plot for the system whose open loop transfer
function is given below and determine its Gain margin and Phase
margin and hence predict the stability of the system.

b) Write short notes on the following:

i) Conditionally Stable Systems
ii) Non minimum-Phase Systems
iii) Gain Margin
iv) Phase Margin
