Handling Precaution For Optical Disk Drive & Media

This document provides safety precautions and handling instructions for optical disk drives and media. Key points include: - Do not drop the drive or expose it to shocks, sunlight, temperature extremes, or high humidity as this can damage the drive. - Do not move the drive or open the disc tray while the drive is operating. Use the open/close button instead of forcing the tray open. - Do not insert objects like pins or hands into the drive while operating to avoid damage. - Use undamaged discs without cracks and clean discs and the drive lens with soft cotton cloth to avoid scratches that can affect reading.

Handling Precaution for Optical Disk Drive & Media

Description
Safety Precautions

Precaution to be taken
1
Do not drop the drive or your computer system having
optical disk drive and protect it from severe shocks. It will
damage the drive or cause it to malfunction.

2
Do not place the drive or your computer system in direct
sunlight.

3
Avoid low-or high-temperature environments

4
Avoid high-humidity environments.

1. Do not move the drive or computer system while the

optical drive is in operation and do not attempt to
open the disc tray by force.
2. Make sure to close all working programs before
attempting to open the tray and always use the
open/close button.
2. Do not insert a pin into the emergency opening while
in operation
1. 4. Do not insert hands in the tray while in operation.

This may cause damage to the product or human

body.

1. Do not use cracked, distorted or damaged discs

2. Always make sure that the disc does not have a crack
before use. If the disc has a crack (especially around
the center hole), it is recommended to make a copy
immediately and use the copy instead. When a
cracked disc is used continuously, the size of the
crack is likely to grow and this will eventually result in
irreparable damage to the disc.
3. In particular, a disc with a crack on the inner tracks
may break while in use

Donts
:
Do not place the disc it under direct sunlight.
1
Do not scratch or place a label on the disc, this may bring excessive vibration in the optical disc

drive and or the labels may get tangled to the internal mechanism of the drive
Do not expose the disc to severe temperature-fluctuations. This may lead to disk warping making it
unstable while it rotates in the drive.
Do not touch the surface of the disc.

If the disc surface becomes dirty with fingerprints, foreign substances or dust, the disc may not
function properly and it lead to excessive movement / wear and tear of drive mechanism
While the LED indicator is blinking, do not turn the computer system off, nor disconnect the
optical disk drive. Otherwise it may cause damage to the drive
While dismantling the drive dont touch the lens .
In half height drives after putting the media in the tray, do not try to push the tray for closing, instead
use only the open/close button.
Don't use a hard cloth, abrasives or solvents for cleaning the lens as that may scratch the lens in

Lens

the slim type optical disk drive.

10

DONOT attempt to touch or clean the lens with any

fabric at any cost. Cleaning it creates micro scratches
on the lens surface. These scratches deflect the laser
beam making it impossible for the laser to read the disk
properly.

scratches on the lens surface

Dos:
1
2

Place the disc so that it sits on its side on a flat surface

Handle the disc with caution to prevent damage from an external shock

3
Place your fingers on the edge of the disc to hold

4
5
6

Clean the disc lightly with soft cotton cloth, starting from the center and move to the edge of the
disc
**Use only M3 X 6 screw for mounting the drive. Using screws other than M3x6 may cause
malfunction
In slim drives press the media gently in the centre of the tray so that
which will hold it correctly and then push the tray for closing.

Problem recognizing that there is a disc in the drive, which leads to long read time and not
responding, but drive may function perfectly, then it's likely to be the disc that is the problem, so the
media should be changed immediately rather than trying with same media.

Note: Depending upon the system model and ordering, optical disk drive may or may not be available in your system.
** Applicable only for 5.25 inch full height optical drive disk used in desktop computers
