Assignment 1

Gas Dynamics (7th Semester, Mechanical engineering)

Fundamentals of Compressible Flow

1. Write the mach number of passenger transport such as Boeing 747.

2. Write the specification of Boeing 747.
3. Carbon tetrachloride has a bulk modulus of elasticity of 1.124 G Pa and a density of 1593 kg/m3.
What is the speed of sound.
4. Find the required pressure to compress the water by 1% of its original volume.
5. Find the required pressure to compress the air by 1% of its original volume.
6. Define compressibility.
7. Under what conditions can a flow be considered as a compressible flow?
8. Derive the Bernoulli equation for isothermal and adiabatic process.
9. Explain the propagation of disturbances in compressible fluid with a neat sketch.
10. Define the following terms:(a)Stagnation pressure (b)Stagnation temperature (c)Stagnation velocity of
sound (4)Mach number (5)Critical and maximum velocity.

11. A supersonic commercial aircraft("Concorde" & "Tupolev Tu-144") flies horizontally at 1500 m
altitude with a constant velocity of 750 m/sec. The aircraft passes directly over a stationary
ground observer. how much time elapses after it has passed over the observer before the
observer hears the aircraft? assume that the average speed of sound is 335 m/sec and that the
airplane creates a small pressure disturbance that may be treated as a sound wave.
12. What should be the minimum temp. of air if it has to be "Hypersonic" when it has a velocity of
1500 m/s ?
13. Derive the equation of velocity of sound for isothermal process and adiabatic process.
14. Derive the relationship of stagnation and static properties for temperature, pressure and density.
15. An aircraft("Tupolev Tu-95") is driven by "propellers" with a diameter of 4 m. At what engine
speed will the tips of the propellers reach sonic velocity if the air temperature is 15 0C ?
16. A newly designed high altitude "Indian" fighter plane(HAL Tejash, Micoyan Mig-29, Dassault
Mirag 2000) is expected to travel at 3000 Km/hr through air at -450C. A small scale model is to
be tested in a wind tunnel with air at 950C. Calculate what air speed should be used in the wind
tunnel for dynamic similarity ?
17. Write the von karman rules of supersonic flow.
18. Derive the general equation of velocity of sound.
19. A turbojet aircraft (General Electic J79) has air entering through an intake of 0.4 m2 in area at a
temperature of 00C and a relative velocity of 150 m/sec. The exit area is 0.6 m 2 and the
combustion products leave the engine at a relative velocity of 350 m/sec and at ambient
pressure of 0.8 bar. Assume the product of combustion have the same properties as air and the
mass of fuel added is negligible. Find the net thrust developed as a result of the fluid flowing
through the engine?
