Experiment No: Date

The document describes an experiment to study an AC voltage controller using SCRs and observe associated waveforms. The experiment uses a power oscilloscope, PE trainer panel, multimeter, and bulb load. The AC voltage controller circuit uses two SCRs to control the firing angle during each half cycle of the AC input, which controls the voltage delivered to the load. The procedure connects the circuit and varies the firing angle with a potentiometer to observe the effect on the load voltage waveform on an oscilloscope.

EXPERIMENT NO:

AIM:

Date:

To study AC Voltage Controller using SCRs function and also its associated waveforms.

APPARATUS:
1 Two channel power oscilloscope.
2 PE Trainer with INV/COV panel.
3 Lab multimeter, 230V/100W bulb.
4 Tachometer of non-contact type from labstock.
THEORY:
The AC Voltage Controller is as shown in fig.
During the positive half cycle of input AC supply, TH1 conducts and voltage appears
across load. During negative half cycle, TH2 conductors and negative voltage
appears
across the load. Changing the firing angle of both the SCRs can control
the load voltage.
Thus we get controlled AC voltage across load. The direction of
load current reverses in
every half cycle of Input AC and the firing instance within these
cycles can be controlled
as such this arrangement is used for controlling AC
power to load. Typical electric heater
based Ovens or Industrial furnaces employ this
type of control. Here two distinct types
are possible.
1) Integral cycle control - Here the control circuit ensures that SCRs are kept ON for
required number of FULL AC cycles and then they are OFF. This cycle repeats so
as to
control average power delivered to load. This arrangement minimizes generation
of
unwanted EMI and RFI noise while switching power.
2) AC Phase control This is demonstrated in PE trainer. Here SCR phase control is
achieved in every cycle as per power requirement of load.
PROCEDURE:
a AC voltage controller with lamp load: For this unit we can use any two SCRs from
CON/INV panel. Input AC should be used from topboard. Lamp load is provided on top
board.
b Make the connections as per wiring sequence given below:
Wiring Sequence: 230V AC-4, 3-26, 6-25, 5-Lampload (L), Lampload (N)-230V AC
(N), Powerscope (Red) Lampload (L), Powerscope (black) Lampload(N).
c A 100W/230V lamp from top board should be used for load.
d The firing pulse selector switch should be kept on 4 th position for getting required gate
pulses.
e Now put on AC mains. Connect CRO across the load & observe the load voltage.
f Observe the change in conduction angle by varying the conduction angle control pot on
LSPT panel.
