Fracture Mechanics

The document discusses the minimum size of defects required to cause brittle fracture in two rocket motor casing materials: (1) low alloy steel with a proof stress of 1200MPa and fracture toughness of 24 KJ/m^2, and (2) marraging steel with a proof stress of 1800MPa and the same fracture toughness. It is found that the minimum defect size is 5.72x10^-4 mm for the low alloy steel and 2.546x10^-4 mm for the marraging steel. The marraging steel requires a smaller defect size for brittle fracture due to its higher proof stress.
