Communication System Design Lab

The NI Communication System Design Lab provides students a hands-on learning experience to design communication systems and implements embedded communication algorithms. It uses NI IF-RIO, a reconfigurable IF transceiver based on Xilinx FPGA, to emulate transceivers and implement software-defined radio applications. The lab enables students to learn communication techniques through experiments involving modulation, encoding, decoding and analyzing performance metrics like BER and EVM. It aims to give students practical experience in all aspects of communication system design.

NI Communication System Design Lab

Communication System Design expands RF measurements beyond the capabilities of
traditional instrumentation. It enables high speed computation to be placed into the data
acquisition and generation process, so that those actions can be sustained for long periods
of time. The ability for analysis during acquisition allows the implementation of protocols or
real-time continuous monitoring.

Modern Communication System Design involves algorithms and implementation

architectures for essential blocks in advanced physical-layer communication systems
(coders and decoders, filters, multi-tone modulation and synchronization sub-systems).
With a project component serving as a vehicle for study of different communication
techniques, architectures and implementations, the NI Communication System Design Lab
provides a hands-on learning experience for students.

The students also learn to implement embedded communication algorithms in a

mathematical manner from communication theory, through algorithm and architecture. A
comprehensive lab manual is also included with experiments that feature background
information and step-by-step instructions.

NI Communication System Design Lab

Features
Developed specifically for Researchers and Designers requiring a platform for researching communications
system design, software-defined radio and emerging wireless technologies and techniques

The NI Communication System Design Stand comprises of NI IF-RIO - a low-cost, reconfigurable IF

transceiver based on Xilinx FPGA and the NI LabVIEW FPGA Module
NI IF-RIO is optimized for communications applications and primarily supports transceiver emulation and
software-defined radio applications with the potential for RF test
NI IF-RIO comprises of 2 input channels, 100 MS/s, 14 bits with built-in digital downconversion
NI IF-RIO comprises of 2 output channels, 200 MS/s, 14 bits with built-in digital upconversion
At the end of the course carried out using this Stand, students will have gone through complete
communication system design, implemented on the NI IF-RIO Board and tested the communication
parameters for the designed communication system like BER, EVM, etc.
