Exercise Chapter 4

Question 1
Define the term acid rain and explain how it occurs.
Question 2
Explain why lake breezes and land breezes occur. How a lake breeze adversely affects the
dispersion of pollutants

Question 4
Determine the effective height of a stack if the following data are given:
Physical stack is 230 m tall with 1.05 m inside diameter
Wind velocity is 3.50 m/s
Air temperature is 15 0C
Barometric pressure is 1000 milibars

Stack gas velocity is 9.44 m/s

Stack gas temperature is 159 0C
Question 5
Describe the formation of looping plume and sketch a diagram of Temperature vs Elevation to
illustrate the stability condition which leads to the formation of a looping plume.
Question 6
On a clear summer afternoon with a wind speed of 3.2 m/s, the particulate concentration was
found to be 1520 g/m3 at a point 2 km downwind and 0.5 km perpendicular to the plume
centerline from a coal-fired power plant. Given the following parameters and conditions,
determine the particulate emission rate of the power plant.

Stack parameters
Height = 75 m
Diameter = 1.5 m
Exit velocity = 12 m
Temperature = 322C

Atmospheric conditions
Pressure = 100 kPa
Temperature = 28C

Question 7
A coffee bean screening and handling operation emits 0.8 g/m3 of fine particulate matter. A
reverse-air baghouse is being proposed for controlling the particulate emissions. The gas
handling system has an exhaust flow rate of 4.5 m3/s. Data from manufacturer as follows:
Bag diameter = 25 cm
Bag length = 10 m
air:cloth = 0.010 m3/s.m2
Bag cleaning = 30%
