Partial Differential Equations Assignment Solutions

This document is an assignment for a partial differential equations course. It contains 3 questions assessing students' understanding of key concepts: 1) Verifying a function satisfies Laplace's equation and finding a function satisfying a PDE with boundary conditions. 2) Showing whether a PDE is linear or homogeneous based on its form, and applying superposition principles. 3) Determining if a set of functions are linearly dependent or independent. The assignment is due on August 7th and is worth a total of 10 points.

(Assignment 1.)
Question: 1 (PDE Solutions)
a). Verify that u(x, y) = ln

4P.
p

x2 + y 2 satisfies the Laplace equation

(2P.)

uxx + uyy = 0
for all (x, y) 6= (0, 0).
b). Find a function u = u(x, t) that satisfies the PDE
uxx = 0,

(2P.)

0 < x < 1, t > 0,

subject to the boundary conditions

u(0, t) = t2 , u(1, t) = 1, t > 0.
Question: 2 (Linearity and Superposition)

4P.

a). Show that

(2P.)

u
2u
= k 2 + Q(u, x, t)
t
x
is linear if Q(u, x, t) = (x, t)u + (x, y) and, in addition, homogeneous if (x, y) = 0. What
is the order of the PDE?
b). In this exercise we derive superposition principles for non-homogeneous problems.
i). Consider L(u) = f where L is a linear operator. If up is a particular solution, L(up ) = f ,
and if u1 and u2 are homogeneous solutions, L(ui ) = 0, show that u = up + c1 u1 + c2 u2
is another particular solution.
(1P.)
ii). If L(u) = f1 + f2 , where upi is a particular solution corresponding to fi , what is a
particular solution for f1 + f2 ?
(1P.)
Question: 3 (Linear Independence)

2P.

Strauss, Section 1.1, Exercise 7

Are the functions 1 + x, 1 x, and 1 + x + x2 linearly dependent or independent? Why?
