Circuit Rejoining - Lesson 8

The document provides instructions for rejoining an aerodrome circuit in different aircraft at specific altitudes. It outlines the standard overhead rejoin procedure in 3 steps: circling at 1500 ft AGL to observe windsocks, flying to the landing end and descending to 500 ft on the non-traffic side, and turning to cross the upwind boundary or runway end to join the downwind leg. It also describes how to join from non-traffic, downwind, or base legs.

AIM: To rejoin the aerodrome circuit in the approved and correct manner.
Circuit height Gyroplanes
Microlights
Helicopters
General Aviation
Overhead rejoin all aircraft

500 ft AGL
800 ft AGL
1000 ft AGL
1500 ft AGL

STANDARD OVERHEAD REJOIN

STEP 1

As you approach from any direction circle the airfield at 1500 ft

AGL in a position to observe windsocks - normally circle in the
anticipated circuit direction.
Left hand circuit keep centre of the field on your left.
Right hand circuit keep centre of the field on your right.

STEP 2

Fly to the landing end and cross to non traffic (non circuit side)
starting a descending mini circuit down to 500 ft parallel to the
runway but on the non traffic side in the direction of the circuit.

STEP 3

LESSON

When reaching 500 ft AGL turn to cross upwind boundary or

runway end in the direction of the circuit and fly crosswind to join
up with the normal circuit downwind leg. (Give way to downwind
traffic already established).

JOINING FROM NON TRAFFIC:

Cross field at 500 ft upwind end, fly

crosswind to downwind leg, turn in direction
of circuit as normal .

JOINING ON DOWNWIND:

Join downwind leg at 500 ft and follow

circuit as normal. Remember to give way to
all traffic already in the circuit.

JOINING ON BASE:

At 500 ft (normally only if there is no traffic

and runway direction is known) give way to
all circuit traffic.
