LEARNING ENGLISH - LESSON ONE (2014)
Misterducans list of general rules for learning English
1. Learning English takes time and patience. It cannot be rushed. Try to relax and take it
easy.
2. The most important thing you need at the beginning is a good vocabulary, for without
words, you have nothing to work with.
3. You must view English as a part of your body just as you would an arm or a leg.
4. It must become a part of your everyday life, daily practise is very important.
5. You must start with a strong foundation or base and slowly build on it, day by day!
6. Do not look at English as just another subject. Your attitude to English and the way
you view it will decide how well you progress. Just as we say in EnglishNo Pain,
No Gain
7. Do not worry about making mistakes, in fact the more mistakes you make, the more
you will learn from them. Just like learning to ride a bike, sometimes you fall off, so
what do you do? You get back on and try again.
8. The two most important words to remember when learning English are Practise,
Confidence. You will find that the more you use English, the better your English will
become and the more confident you become, then the more you will want to use it.

There are many ways to say hello:
Hi
Hello
Hi there
Hello there
Hey, how are you doing?
Howdy friend (USA)
Whats up?
Hows it going?
Wow, its good to see you!
howdy /hadi/ interjection American English informal hello
there /e/ adverb 6 used when greeting someone or calling to them : Hi there, you must be
Laura. Hey, you there! Watch out!

hey /he/ interjection 1 a shout used to get someones attention or to show surprise, interest,
or annoyance - !, ! (ngac nhin): Hey, wait a minute! 2 informal hello - nay! (vui ve, hoi...):
Hey, whats up? 3 but hey informal said when you do not think something is important nhng thi nao: I would have liked to go, but hey, it's no big deal.
We sometimes use a double greeting, for example
Hi there, hey how are you doing?
Hello, how have you been?
Its good to see you, hows life been treating you?
If you are meeting someone for the first time, you can say:
Good to meet you
Its nice to meet you
Im pleased to meet you
Its a pleasure to meet you
These sentences are often used after the other person has been introduced to you.
If you are meeting someone you have not seen or heard from for a long time, then you can
show real surprise and shock.

live /lv/ verb 19 live and breathe something to enjoy doing something so much that you

If you are in a hurry, there may only be a short time, in which to make your greeting.

This type of greeting is common these days because we are all in such a big hurry to get
some placefast !

pushed /pt/ adjective [not before noun] British English informal 1 be pushed for

pushed to do something to have a lot of difficulty doing something : I was hard pushed to
keep my mind on my work.
dash /d/ verb 1 [intransitive always + adverb/preposition] to go or run somewhere very
quickly lao ti, xng ti: Olive dashed into the room, grabbed her bag, and ran out again. 2
dash sbs hopes to disappoint someone by telling them that what they want is not possible :
Hopkins hopes were dashed when his appeal was denied. 3 (I) must dash/(I) have to dash
British English spoken used to tell someone that you must leave quickly (Ti) ang vi/phi
i: Anyway, I must dash I said Id meet Daniel at eight.
