Sample Answer
Problem statement: What is the effect of different activity on the content of
carbon dioxide in the air? Variables: MV: Different type of activity RV: Percentage of carbon dioxide in exhaled air. CV: Duration of activity/concentration of potassium hydroxide/air sample. Hypothesis: The more vigorous the activity, the higher the percentage of carbon dioxide. Apparatus: J-tube, basin, delivery tube, boiling tube, and stopwatch Material: potassium hydroxide solution and water Procedure:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Fill a basin with water.
Place a J-tube in the water. Start the stopwatch. Instruct the students to run on the spot for 5 minutes. Immediately, collect a sample of exhaled air using the set up as shown in diagram above. 6. Trap about 5 cm of exhaled air in the arm of J-tube. 7. Place the J-tube under water for 5 minutes to stabilise the temperature. 8. Measure under water the initial length of the air column and record in the table. 9. Remove the water from the J-tube until about 1 cm of water remains form the air column. 10.Fill 3 cm of potassium hydroxide into the J-tube. 11.Move the air column back and forth to mix the air with potassium hydroxide. 12.Place the J-tube under water for 5 minutes to stabilise the temperature. 13.Measure under water the length of the air column and record in the table. 14.Repeat steps 1 13 for two more different activities; push-ups and sitting.
