Dewatering

The document outlines procedures for dewatering excavation sites. It involves conducting geotechnical investigations and draw down tests to design an effective dewatering system. Test bore wells and piezometers will be used to study groundwater levels and install production wells. Pumps and equipment will be installed and monitored to continuously lower the water table during excavation and until foundations have cured. Dewatering discharge will be properly disposed of through pipes or storage tanks. Standby power will also be available to ensure continuous dewatering operations.

Dewatering

Objective
To define the standard procedure and arrangements for lowering and
continuously controlling the piezometric levels of the groundwater in
the subsurface materials including the control and handling of surface
water.

Scope
This work procedure covers the Basic dewatering system, the Stand-by
dewatering system, stand-by power system, monitoring devices,
sumps, pumps, drains including all associated equipment and disposal
of dewatering discharge properly.

Procedure

A complete Geotechnical Investigations including draw down test

will be carried out in accordance with the recommendations by an
underground water specialists /consultant. Following the properly
designed dewatering system shall avoid the loss of fine from the
bottom and sides of excavation.

A test bore well along with observation wells/Piezometer to study

the water table, discharge of water, cone of depression, and draw
down aquifer identifications, source of water and soil strata
behavior.

This test tube well will be utilized for dewatering and on the basis of
this water study further tube wells shall be installed in accordance
with Geotechnical recommendations.

All necessary equipments & pumping will be installed for

dewatering. Details of depth of bore holes, capacity of pumps,
water levels in all the piezometers shall be recorded properly and
be submitted to the Engineer for information and necessary
information.

Plans, sketches and detailed calculations for dewatering system as

per the specifications shall be submitted to the Engineer for
approval.

All excavations will be dewatered properly so that standing water is

avoided in any case.

Dewatering will be done with proper polythene lining or as specified

in specifications.

Dewatering of excavation shall be done in a manner that seepage,

loss of fines etc are prevented the water table shall be maintained
at least 1m below the prevailing excavation level. Dewatering shall
be continued till the concrete works for foundation has sufficiently
hardened as instructed by the Engineer and then the system shall
shut off in stages.

All seepages along the bottom of the footing will be controlled to

prevent the accumulation of water.

All arrangements to operate tube wells as per geotechnical

recommendations will be carried out for 24 hrs working.

Pumping water will be taken away by Hose pipes/hard pipes as

required to nearby drain/channels (if available) or in the storage
tanks at the ground level and extra water from storage tanks with
the help of water bowsers.

Care will be taken that excavated slopes remain stable during

dewatering process.

Submersible pumps will be placed in the ditch/channel to cater for

the emergency as standby arrangements and the system shall be
checked with 03 hrs per week functionality.

A supervisor will supervise all this operation along with his team of
mechanical fitters, plumbers and labors under the instructions of
Project Manager.

Stand-by power arrangement shall be made in the form of

Generators of sufficient capacity to cater for pumping operation
without interruption. Whenever power failure will happened
dewatering system will raise intimate as alarm for switching to
stand-by power generation.
