DEFINE:

1. Cartesian or Gross Product - In mathematics, a Cartesian product is a mathematical operation

which returns a set (or product set or simply product) from multiple sets. That is, for sets A and B,
the Cartesian product A B is the set of all ordered pairs (a, b) where a A and b B. Products
can be specified using set-builder notation.
A x B = { (a,b) | a A and b B }
A table can be created by taking the Cartesian product of a set of rows and a set of columns. If
the Cartesian product rows columns are taken, the cells of the table contain ordered pairs of the
form (row value, column value).

2. Relation - A relation is simply a set of ordered pairs. A relation is a relationship between sets of
values. In math, the relation is between the x-values and y-values of ordered pairs. The set of all
x-values is called the domain, and the set of all y-values is called the range.

3. Function - In mathematics, a function is a relation between a set of inputs and a set of permissible
outputs with the property that each input is related to exactly one output. An example is the
function that relates each real number x to its square x2. The output of a function f corresponding
to an input x is denoted by f(x) (read "f of x").

4. Domain/Range - Domain of a relation is the set of the 1st value or all x-coordinates of the ordered
pairs of that relation. Range of a relation is the set of the 2 nd value or all y-coordinates of the
ordered pairs of that relation.

5. Composite - The function composition of two functions takes the output of one function as the
input of a second one. The x is just a place holder. It is defined by:
( g f ) ( x ) = g ( f (x) )

6. Inverse - An inverse function goes the other way around. It is a function that undoes the action of
the another function. Using function machine metaphor, forming an inverse function means
running the function machine backwards.

The function:
f(x) =
Put "y" for "f(x)":
y =
Subtract 3 from both sides:
y-3 =
Divide both sides by 2: (y-3)/2 =
Swap sides:
x =
Solution (put "f-1(y)" for "x") :

2x+3
2x+3
2x
x
(y-3)/2

f-1(y) = (y-3)/2
