Highland Luzon

IDIOPHONES

These are instruments that produce sound


primarily by vibrating the instrument itself
e.g. shaking, striking, and rubbing.

MEMBRANOPHONES

These are instruments that produce sound


through vibrating a stretched membrane of
an animal skin. These are played by rubbing
or tapping.

CHORDOPHONES

These are instruments that make sound


through vibrating strings. These are also
called stringed instruments which are
plucked, bowed or strummed to produce
sound.

AEROPHONES

These are musical instruments that cause


body of air to vibrate. These are also called
wind instruments.

Paldong
Is an open bamboo pipe that has three finger
holes and a mouthpiece

Bunkaka

Is a bamboo clapper shaped like a slingshot.


It is used by the Tingians and Igorots.

Gangsa
Is a single hand-held smooth surfaced gong
with a narrow rim of the Apayaos anf Ifugaos.

Ludag
Is a drum of the Apayaos. It is a doube
headed drum and can be beaten by the palm

Bamboo Violin
Resembles the Western Violin used by the
Negritosof Zambales. It has three strings
made of abaca.

Kaleleng / Balinging
A nose flute that is played through the nostril
while the other end is being plugged.

Sulibaw
This is a conical tenor drum which is
originated either from the Ifugaos or Ibalois.
It is played by means of tapping with hands
or with a padded stick

Diw-diw-as
It is made up of slender bamboo pipes of
different length. It is also called panpipe. It is
played by moving the mouth through the
holes while blowing it at the same time.

Kalutang
Is one of the oldest indigenous Filipino
instrument found in Tagalog Region

Pasiyak
Is a water whistle common among the
Tagalog and Kapampangans

Pas-ing
Is a guitarmade from bambooand is used by
the igorots.

Tambuli
Is a trumphet made from carabao horn used
to give warnings and call for people
assembly.

Butting

Is a bamboo tied with banana fibers which


served as strings. This instrument is alsothe
same with gurimbao of the Negritos.

Palipal
Is also bamboo clapper from Ifugao. This
instrument is played by shaking: one half

swings up and down and in the down swing


hits up and down.

Tongatong
Is a bamboo percussion instrument used by
the people of Kalinga. It is madeof bamboo
cut in various lengths.
