Welcome to our Fall 2013 auction. We are fortunate to be offering to collections from the Stephen Mullendore and Rose Brandt estates. All lots may be bid via the internet through www.artfact.com. Information is
also located on our FACEBOOK page at www.facebook.com/roschmitt. Please like us to receive updates.
There are several bidding options, including our own in-house online absentee system for which there is no fee.
This can be found at our website listed above. Phone lines are available for bidding on better items and a prearramged phone appointment is necessary. Full details are on page 2. The last page of this catalog has an absentee
bidder form for submitting bids by fax, e-mail or mail.
Our catalog is written by Bob Schmitt, Tom Manning, Bob Frishman and Daniel Horan, with Chris Bailey
serving as editor emeritus. Rick Merritt and John Kovacik also contribute. Although one or two detail images
are offered in this print version, www.roschmitt.com has many more detail views available online, especially on
uncommon items.

bidding format to allow our absentee bidders to be more competitive, contact us for details. We notice that some absentee bids lose by only one bid,
a frustration that can be reduced if a live person has authority to bid one
more time. Bid forms are available on our webpage or in the rear of the
catalog. You may submit your bid by fax, snail mail or e-mail to:
RESERVES: There are few items in this sale with a reserve, or confidential minimum selling price established with the consignor or vendor.
Items failing to sell will be noted in the results sheet as $0.00.
ESTIMATES: After each description, weve indicated a high and low
dollar estimate that should be used as a general guide in making bidding
decisions. The final price may vary considerably from these estimates.
CONDITION SCALE: in order: Poor, fair, good, very good, excellent,
& outstanding. If the lot description includes the words as-found, the
item came to us from storage and, although we may have noted external
shortcomings, we have not looked inside. General maintenance items
such as broken suspension springs, broken or missing weight cords, &
missing keys are not mentioned. Although most clocks were running
when we took possession of them, we cannot guarantee that they will run
without adjustment when you get them home. Dimensions are approximate.
AGE & PROVENANCE: We do occasionally offer modern reproductions of earlier models, but they are clearly indicated {Howard reissues,
for example}. Restoration to older models is clarified: new paper dial
or new tablet should prove self-explanatory.
KEYS: Some clocks may have keys, but we do NOT provide them for
all clocks; they are available from suppliers such as Timesavers.com or
Merritts Antiques.
RETURNS AND REFUNDS: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES

19th century. He was the embalmer of abolitionist John Brown, and an
organizer of the New York State Undertakers Association. He also served
as the treasurer and senior warden of the Third Masonic District, Brooklyn. The enameling on the cuvette confirms his Masonic connections. The
watch is of very high quality, and unusual in that the only name found
on it is that of Mr. Hopper. The watch movement is similar in design to
watches manufactured by Tiffany & Co. during the late 19th century, and
was probably ordered by Mr. Hopper through one of the prominent New
York jewelers importing high quality Swiss work for sale in the United
States. An exceptional watch with a very interesting history. $4000-$5000

1034. English, London, 4-tune, musical bracket clock, Georgian era, with
unusual serpentine dial and door by
Willm Challenner, triple fusee, playing
on 11 bells with 14 hammers, retains
original crown wheel/verge escapement, and with central calendar hand,
c1760 Condition: this
clock was formerly in
the collection of the
late Robert S. Rosen of
Los Angeles. Around
40 years ago, the dial
rings were sent for refinishing and got
lost in the post and
so new ones were
ordered with a
sketch of the information.
Anyone
who has ordered
from Goodacre Engraving knows that whatever you write
down, including style is what you will
receive back, net result is that careful
spelling and lettering of the tunes came
back exactly as written on the paper,
rather than in the style of the period.
Similarly, a sketch of the chapter ring
with calendar had the dates down with
irregular spacing, and so it was made.
If you can get past the need for better
dial rings, what remains is quite wonderful, the clock playing 4 recognizable
tunes at intervals and on request, the
back plate very nicely engraved with
foliate pattern, and the case with original caryatids and other trimmings, and
the escapement has never been modified
from
the
original. Tunes

Movement is in pretty good mechanical condition and pendulum is snapping from second
to second; shows a little recoil which could use
adjustment. These are an uncommon English
table regulator, all by the same maker, unsigned.
Pendulum has a distortion on one side from being dropped. Ht 18 $3000-$4000

1132. W. Holland, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, English oak 8 day fusee time only wall
clock, c1890 Condition: the solid oak case,
with hinged doors on the sides and bottom,
has been nicely refinished The signed painted metal dial has just minor wear, fading,
and one small inpainted area, last 3 letter of
Ferry gone. The single chain fusee unsigned
movement includes a correct pendulum.
Overall diameter 16.5 $350-$550

German, Lenzkirch,
immense and ornate Freischwinger or free-swinger with
pendulum open in bottom section, serial #824349, c1885 Condition: this clock is a Lenzkirch
collectors dream. Was imported
to the US in 1968 and has been
in storage since. Both case and
movement are dirty. Note movement mounting sets up on a block
to bring dial flush with the door.
Sometimes this indicates a marriage, but in this case it was done
because of the extra deep case;
there is no evidence of tampering. Not immediately evident in
the movement are the dozens of
decorative bronze castings, since
they have all turned dark brown. In spite of having 3 major references on
Lenzkirch, we could not find this exact case in a book (send us an email if
you know the model) Charts of serial numbers vary quite a bit, but we can
safely say that this is 4th quarter of 1800s. Thumbscrews for movement
mount are lacking. Some nicks and scrapes to case commensurate with
its age. With the many turnings and finial tips in bronze, this is a very
heavy clock. We recommend blanket wrap delivery. Ht 52 $3000-$4000
1135. French picture clock, oil on canvas, 8 day time and strike movement by Chaumont, Paris, with 4-tune music box, c1880 Condition: this
is a better-than-average example, with the clock face showing in the scenes
church steeple. The unsigned painting portrays a riverside village with a
fisherman, etc., and has been nicely repaired long ago with a few patches
on the reverse side. The signed thread-suspension movement strikes on
a gong and also actuates the very nice sounding large music box mounted
above which has selector switches accessed through a brass plate on the
side of the case. One sticker lists the four tunes; the smaller round one advertises a clockmaker in Brugge. We were able to produce a slow melody,
but service will be needed on both movements, and their linkages. The
frame has its gilding mostly intact, and measures 22 x 27 $2000-$3000
1136.
Swiss,

spring

pendulum movement, castle style
automaton, with
monkey appearing as a conductor, moving his arm
to indicate the striking of the gong;
c1875 Condition: this clock was
most likely carved in the Interlaken
area, a region well known for carved
cases, both figural and architectural.
The exterior of the case is incised to
simulate brick, the top cut to simulate shingles and the dial flanked by
Corinthian columns with gilt metal
trimmings. The steeple does separate from the main case for service
of the monkey linkage. There are
some missing bits of brass trim and
some nicks and scrapes to the case;
front panel with dry split, all commensurate with its age. The well
made French time and strike movement goes for 8+ days; although it
ticks and tries to strike, it would benefit from service. The gilt dial with
cartouche numerals is exceptional
and very clean. The linkage to the
monkeys arm, with counterweight,
needs adjusting. Overall an interesting clock for the novelty collector. Ht

Grand
Sonnerie wall clock,
extra large, with profuse carvings and
extra moldings, serial #100000--66384,
dial with retailers name = Johann
Greiner, Graz, c1880 Condition:
overall excellent condition. all numbers match on mounting bracket
movement and pendulum. Note that
this case is extra deep, and a one inch
block is used to space the movement
out from the back board, however
there is no bracket of later tampering.
Pattern on weights, pendulum and
dial is etched in, not engraved, and
the scrolling pattern on pendulum
and weights does not quite match the
leafy pattern on the dial center. The
case features a large dentil treatment
above dial, and a well pendulum female bust at top. Dial is flanked by
two full round and reeded columns,
and surrounded by a deeply carved
bezel, the lower pendulum of this
double door design with well detailed pilasters. Very heavy door is held
in place by pendulum robust lock and original key. This one of a kind
case was likely commissioned to match a set of dining room furniture.
This clock weights approx 65 pounds and we suggest a stronger wall wall
hanger. Ht 64 $2000-$2500

the elaborate carved and

dull finish but no losses. One small side
molding piece is detached but inside the
case. The original crest has been nailed into
position. The fancy metal dial matches the
pattern on the weight, pulleys, and pendulum bob, but one of the weights is absent.
The cast brass beat scale also is fancy and
old. Both glasses are modern, held by
glazier points. The signed Medaille DOr
movement, number 92153, does its quarter
hours, but needs adjustment. Ht 49 $700-$1100

3-weight, grand sonnerie, Vienna
Regulator, finely engraved dial center,
weights and pendulum, in an over-size
oak case with carved top piece and fluted finials, c1890 Condition: the Becker
movement is not original to this case,
and there is a block of wood added to
the case back to bring the dial up to the
door glass, and that block is too thick,
such that the door will not close. Although the brass dial and weights are
polished, the movement itself, though
complete, is very dirty and will need
cleaning before operation. In spite of
the work needed this is a case with extra
detail and is very eye catching. Ht 64
