From the Pastors Desk

Dont Deport Our Families was the rallying cry at the march Sunday
afternoon from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka to the office
of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Old Townwhere
we were met with enthusiastic support by the staff of Congressman
Jared Huffman. Over 150 people participatedshowing our support
for the Sun Valley Farm migrant workers arrested in 2008, who are
facing deportation proceedings. Lynn was there interviewing people
while he and his camera crew videotaped the entire event. It was
nice to see Rick, Sara and Nate Botzler also marching with us!
Since 2008, many undocumented workers have lived in fear in the
shadows of our communityeven while they are paying taxes and
their children are attending school. As May 1st was International
Workers Rights Day, and with Mothers Dayoriginally an anti-war
movement for peacecoming up, this was an excellent opportunity
to highlight the rights of all Gods children for dignity, respect, and
justice.
As you know from my sermon earlier that day, Presbyterians and
Lutherans have a long history of advocacy for immigrants and
refugees. Our national Advocacy offices in Washington, D.C. support
comprehensive immigration reform that has a pathway to citizenship,
eliminates back logs, provides a commonsense plan for future flow,
avoids the militarization of our southern border and provides for
humane enforcement.
We must remember that we are a nation of immigrants--with the
exception of Native Americans--and within a generation or two our
country will be a majority of minorities! For children under the age
of five this is already the case! God calls us to be the church of the
stranger, to welcome and love immigrants, and recognize the
suffering created by an unjust system. Let us pledge to continue our
churchs historic leadership in caring for refugees and immigrants.
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have
entertained angels unawares (Hebrews 13:2)

Deacons Corner
Dear GGS Members and Friends:
The GGS Deacons invite you to join us in making donations to support the Betty Chinn Foundation in
successfully managing a new program that will provide transitional housing for homeless families in
Humboldt County.
Betty Chinn and the Chinn Foundation Board are excited to announce the purchase of a building,
adjacent to the Betty Kwan Chinn Day Center in Eureka, to be used as transitional housing for the
homeless. Betty's vision is to move homeless families off the streets, teach them to live together as a
family unit, assist them in finding jobs then transitioning them to live independently on their own.
The Deacons will provide matching funds for GGS donations up to $500 designated for the Betty
Chinn Foundation. Each Sunday in May, the Deacons will place a labeled basket at the back of the
church to collect these special donations. Please make your checks to GGS and on the memo line
write Betty Chinn Foundation.
In addition, Deacon Janet Neebe has applied for a Thrivent Financial Action Team grant of $250. Janet
will assist Betty and her team in making purchases for needed items in the new building. We will
report progress on these donation activities at a church service in early June.
Thank you for considering this request for special donations in support of Betty Chinns transitional
housing program for homeless families in Humboldt County. We appreciate the GGS church
community for its consistent generosity toward those in need.
Respectfully,
The GGS Deacons

There are two important events coming up, and assistance is needed with both of them.
First, on Saturday, May 14, the US Post Office is sponsoring its annual food drive. Postal carriers will
be picking up donations curbside at mailboxes and then dropping them off at the McKinleyville Family
Resource Center, just adjacent to GGS.
Help with sorting donations will be especially useful at MFRC between 3-4 p.m. that day. If you can
spare an hour or two, it would be greatly appreciated!
Second, on Sunday, May 15, GGS will be celebrating Pentecost. Traditionally, the GGS sanctuary is
decorated with helium-filled red balloons.
Kathy Schmidt is arranging for the helium container and balloons. She needs several volunteers to
help fill the balloons and tie them. To assist, please come at about 9:15 a.m. that Sunday.
Hoping you can come and help out for at least a little while on either or both days. Thanks!
