Tutorial 5 Steam Generators

This document contains 5 questions from a textbook on energy conversion and steam generators. The questions cover topics like calculating the exit gas temperature of a furnace, determining the heat transfer surface area required for an economizer and air preheater, and calculating the superheater surface area and maximum spray water for a steam generator. The questions provide technical details about steam generation processes and heat exchangers.

Steam Generators

These questions are taken from text book Thermodynamics An Engineering Approach 2010 by
Cengel & Boles

1) In a boiler furnace, the heat-absorbing surface is equivalent to 11500 m2. The furnace
receives the combustion air at 120 oC and consumes liquid fuel at 300 t/hr. The air and
flue gas flow are 11.8 and 12.7 kg/kg of fuel respectively. The fuel higher heating value
(HHV) is 42000 kJ/kg. Find the exit gas temperature of furnace if 50% of heat available is
absorbed by water tubes in furnace. What is the heat released rate based on surface area?

2) In a steam generator of 20 t/hr steam capacity, an economizer is used to raise
water temperature from 95 to 200 oC. The flue gases enter the economizer at 650 oC. The
fuel flow rate is 2500 kg/hr with air to fuel ratio of 18. The overall heat transfer
coefficient is 40 W/m2K. Calculate the heat transfer surface area required in the following
cases: (a) parallel flow and (b) counter flow.

3) In an air preheater, the available gases flow rate is 440 t/hr at 315oC. To avoid metal
corrosion and maintain a reasonable temperature in the pollution control equipment, the set
design minimum flue gas temperature is 250oC. If the following conditions are obtained: air
to fuel ratio (mass basis) is 12.1, room temperature is 26oC, and overall heat transfer
coefficient is 12 W/m2K, estimate the heat transfer surface area and the temperature of
combustion air leaving the heater for counter flow condition.

4) For a steam generator of 110 t/hr capacity, the steam pressure is 54 bar while the
temperature is 360 oC. The flue gas temperature at superheater inlet is 850 oC at a flow
rate of 295 t/hr. Assuming counter flow superheater, calculate the superheater heat
transfer surface area if the overall heat transfer coefficient is 30 W/m2K.

5) In a steam generator, the superheater characteristics is represented by the following
equation: t=220+ ms/82, where t is the superheat temperature in oC and ms is the steam mass
flow rate in kg/hr, while the steam pressure is 22 bar. Spray desuperheating is used to

maintain constant temperature over the range from 7 to 11 t/hr of steam. The available
spray water is at 95 oC. Calculate the maximum quantity of spray water required and the
highest steam temperature reached before superheating.
