The Weeknd wants to make a demo CD with
his new jams. Virgin Records charges $40 for
a basic CD plus $10 per track. Meanwhile,
Jay-Z offered to let The Weeknd use his
personal recording studio for $10 for the
basic CD plus $20 per track.
Let x = the number of tracks and y = dollars
The system is modeled by the equations:
y = 10x + 40

y-int: _________

y = 20x + 10
Step 3: Find the __________________

Part I: Graphing Systems of Linear Equations in Slope-Intercept Form

1. ASU Prep is holding a fundraising contest to see which sports team can sell the most
boxes of chocolate bars. The football team has already sold 6 boxes of chocolate, and
the soccer team has sold 3 boxes. Alex and Javier predict that the football team will
continue to sell 1 box per day, and Niki and Natalie think the soccer team will sell 2
boxes per day.
Let x = days and y = boxes of chocolate
The system is modeled by the equations:
y=x+6
y = 2x + 3
Graph the system and identify the solution. If these predictions are right, how many days
will it take for the teams to reach a fundraising tie?

2. Graph the system and identify the solution:

y = -2x + 1

y=x5

Part III: Graphing Systems of Linear Equations in Standard Form

Example B: Tenai wants to go on a shopping spree but has no room in his closet, so he decides to hold a garage sale to
get rid of some his old shirts and jeans. During the garage sale he sells a total of 8 items. He sells each shirt for 1 dollar
and each pair of jeans for 3 dollars. He makes a total of $18 for during his garage sale extravaganza.
Let x = the number of shirts and y = the number of jeans
This system is represented by the equations:
x+y=8
x + 3y = 18

1. Graph the solution and identify the solution. 2. How many shirts did he sell?
Step 0: Make sure both equations are in

Change equations from standard to

slope-int. by solving for ____!

Step 1: Graph first equation

Slope: ________

Flash forward to Senior year! Youre studying for the SAT, and you decide to take a
practice test. There are 50 questions on the test. You dont skip any. Every correct
answer earns you 3 points, but every incorrect answers earns you -1 point. You end up
with a score of 58 (out of a maximum 150 points).
Solve the system of equations above that represents the scenario, in order to
determine how many problems you got correct and how many you got
incorrect.

Example C
For some reason, Ezra decides to make a lot of Koolaid. It takes him 16 cups of Koolaid
to fills 1 large pitcher and 2 small pitchers. He then fills 5 small pitchers, and subtracts
1 large pitcher from that amount, and ends up with 5 cups of Koolaid.
Set up a system of equations that represents this scenario.
Then use elimination to determine how many cups of Koolaid fill 1 small
pitcher, and how many cups of Koolaid fill 1 large pitcher.

solve systems of equations!
QUICK Review: Distributing and combining like terms
(4x 3) =
(2x) + x 4y =
4(x 3) +2x 5 =
3x + 2(-x +1) + 11 =

Example A:
y = 3x + 2
x + 2y = 11

1 Open your eyes! Is anything

isolated?
Yes? Victory high-five someone.
No? Isolate it yourself.
Then, high five.
2 Put a BOX around the ___________
term, AND what its EQUAL to.
3 Put a BOX around that SAME
VARIABLE in the other equation.
4 THINK: ALL THE __________ ARE
EQUIVALENT (the same)
Therefore, I can s______________ in
one for another
5 Substitute into the 2nd equation
Hint: use ______
Now you should have only _____
variable in that equation
6 Solve for the variable in that equation
7 Plug back into _______ equation, and
solve for the ______ ____________.

Example B:

y = 2x
x + y = 12

Steps:
1 Find isolated
variable

2 Substitute in to
the other
equation using
( )

3 Now that
theres 1
variable in this
equation, we
can solve.

4 Plug back in to
either
equation to
solve for 2nd
variable

Key point: If you see a variable ISOLATED, then you should use _________________,
not ______________________!
y=2 x5
1 x=3 y1
2
3 * y=x +5
x+ 2 y =9
4 x y=7
y=3 x1

2 x 3 y=12
x=4 y+ 1

x= y +2
4 x 3 y=11
