MACMILLAN

WORLD-WIDE ENGLISH
Ronald Ridout
NEW UP-TO-DATE COURSES FOR ADULTS
BASED ON THE SELF-HELP METHOD
ENGLISH IS LEARNT THROUGH ACTIVE PRACTICE
CAREFULLY GRADED FROM.THE BEGINNING
STRUCTURES INTRODUCED SINGLY AND THOROUGHLY DRILLED
SUPPLEMENTARY READERS AVAILABLE STRUCTURALLY GRADED TO
EACH STAGE
ALL BOOKS ILLUSTRATED FUNCTIONALLY IN COLOUR
COLOUR ALSO USED AS A LINGUISTIC AID IN THE TEXT
This new course for adults and secondary students learning
English as a foreign language, while following the new tradition of
applied linguistics, breaks much new ground as an instrument of
language teaching.
In the first place the books themselves teach. The/ do not merely
teach the facts about language; they teach the use of the language
itself. They do this by the self-help method, whereby the student is
enabled to help himself to use correct everyday sentences all the
time. By practising correct English often enough it eventually
becomes a habit. Only when he is well on the way to this habit
formation is the student given the rule. Rules are therefore scarce
in the early book and become more numerous, and more helpful,
in the later ones.
Then, with an Introductory Book and four main books, the course
is the most carefully graded available. The structures or grammatical
points are introduced one at a time and thoroughly practised before
the next is attempted. The books are so arranged that students can
enter the course at any point appropriate to their own background.
Additional reading matter exactly graded to the course is provided in the form of supplementary readers. Even beginners,
therefore, are sure of being able to read successfully and easily the
readers provided for their stage.

A Modern
English
Grammar
K. SCHIBSBYE
Professor of English in the
University of Copenhagen
This is a grammar at intermediate university level, originally
published in Danish. The intention of the author has been
to make a systematic presentation of the English parts of
speech in a form which provides easy reference but which is
at the same time readable as a continuous text. For this
reason the numerous examples are set within the text while
their key features are lightly differentiated for easy
recognition. The examples are all taken from normal
modern English, and the grammar should therefore not only
be suitable for university use, but also for advanced courses
in special institutes where a good standard of modern
English is aimed at Demy 8vo, 424 pp, 25s net

CAMBRIDGE
English Pronunciation
Illustrated
J. L. M. TRIM
Which does a foreigner find more confusing, English
pronunciation or the English sense of humour? This is
a guide to both. The sounds of English are isolated,
contrasted and drilled in a way the foreign student and
his teacher will find easy, accurate and convincing. Peter
Kneebone's drawings bring pronunciation to life in a most
amusing way and there is a full phonetic transcription.
The book is one of a Cambridge series which already
includes French and Spanish pronunciation illustrated.
