Overview

Link aggregation means to bind multiple parallel physical links

between two switches into one logical link of bigger bandwidth.
Suppose there are four 100 Mbps links between two switches.
After the aggregation, there will be only one logical link of 400
Mbps unidirectional bandwidth and 800 Mbps bidirectional
bandwidth between them. The aggregate link is regarded as a
logical link in the STP environment.
Link aggregation requires that the bound physical links have the
same features such as bandwidth and duplex mode. If the ports
are access ports, they must belong to the same VLAN.

Load Distribution
Mechanism

In link aggregation, the load sharing mechanism is employed for

balanced use of the parallel physical links.
The load of multiple physical links can be balanced according to
several algorithms such as the algorithm based on the source
port, the source MAC address or the destination MAC flow.

Benefits of Link
Aggregation

Through link aggregation, multiple physical links are bound into

one logical link. This increases the link bandwidth and improves
the reliability.
For the parallel links between two switches, the port processing
capabilities and physical links of the device cannot be fully
utilized if link aggregation is not used since the STP keeps one
link and blocks the rest links. On the contrary, the STP will see a
logical link of great bandwidth between the switches if the link
aggregation technology is applied. The use of link aggregation
can make full use of the port processing capabilities and physical
links of all devices and the traffic is evenly shared by the parallel
physical links. Once a link fails, the traffic will be automatically
re-distributed among the rest available links. The switchover in
the case of such a failure will be completed in a matter of
milliseconds, much faster than STP switching, and so will not
impact the majority of applications.

802.1Q and Link

Aggregation
The aggregate link may also be an 802.1Q port. It is required
that all the bound physical links be trunk ports and have the
same VLAN range.
It is recommended that you set link aggregation first and then
configure VLAN.
