TYPES OF COMPUTER
COMPUTER:
A computer is generally defined as a programmable machine.
The two principal characteristics of a computer are: it responds
to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it
can execute a pre-recorded list of instructions.
TYPES OF COMPUTERS
Computers can be generally classified by size and power as
follows:
1. SUPERCOMPUTER:
Supercomputers are one of the fastest computers currently
available. Supercomputers are very expensive and are
employed for specialized applications
that require immense amount of
mathematical calculations. For
example, weather forecasting,
scientific simulations, graphics, fluid
dynamic calculations, nuclear energy
research, electronic design, and
analysis of geological data.
2. MAINFRAME COMPUTER:
Mainframe is very large in size
and is an expensive computer
capable of supporting hundreds
or even thousands of users
simultaneously. Mainframe
executes many programs

concurrently and supports many simultaneous execution of


programs.

3. MINI COMPUTER:
A minicomputer is a type of
computer that possesses most of
the features and capabilities of a
large computer but is smaller in
physical size. A minicomputer fills
the space between the mainframe
and microcomputer, and is smaller
than the former but larger than the
latter. Minicomputers are mainly used as small or midrange
servers operating business applications.
4. MICROCOMPUTER:
A microcomputer is a computer with a
central processing unit (CPU) as a
microprocessor. Designed for individual
use, a microcomputer is smaller than a
mainframe or a minicomputer. The term
microcomputer is not as commonly
used as it was during the 1970s1980s.Now refer to microcomputers as,
simply, computers, or personal computers (PC).
TYPES OF MICROCOMPUTER:
The types of Microcomputers are as follows:
DESKTOP COMPUTER:

A compact computer that uses a microprocessor and is


designed for individual use, as by a person in an office or at
home or school.

TABLET COMPUTER:
A tablet is a wireless, portable personal
computer with a touchscreen interface.

Personal Digital Assistant, is a handheld
device that combines computing,
telephone/fax, Internet and networking
features. A typical PDA can function as a

and personal organizer. PDAs may also be
referred to as a palmtop, hand-held computer or pocket
computer.
LAPTOP:
Portable and compact personal
computer with the same capabilities as
desktop computer.
