Analysis Essay
Directions: Choose and view an Epic Rap video. Follow the writing process to write an analysis
discussing the videos effectiveness as a classical argument.
The introduction must state a problem, create a context for the analysis (introduce and
summarize the object, event, or behavior to be analyzed, and provide motivation for the reader to
read and the writer to write), and provide background information. The introduction must also
introduce the principles for analysis and contain a thesis statement. The thesis statement must
follow the following format: By applying principle (or definition) X, one can understand (topic)
as (conclusion based on analysis).
The body paragraphs thoroughly develop the analysis in a systematic manner, answers the So
What? question, and provides more than just a summary. The following components of a
classical argument can be addressed: structure, persuasive appeals, origin of argument questions,
rational or pseudo argument components, and claims supported by reasons.
The conclusion contains a summary of the analysis and all essential elements of a well-written
conclusion. A larger point is made.
MLA format must be followed. The source must be properly cited in-text and on a works cited
page. At least one in-text citation must include an attributive tag. At least one in-text citation
must be basic and include correct parenthetical information. Plagiarism is avoided.
Grammar and mechanics will also be graded for accuracy. Particular attention will be given to
topics already covered in class. More than ten grammatical errors will result in no grade.
Evidence of each stage of the writing process must be submitted: prewrite (brainstorming);
planning (outline); drafting; revising (peer review form); and publishing (final copy). The target
length is 3-4 pages. This total does not include the works cited page.
