Revenue Stamps of India - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia PDF

India has used revenue stamps since the mid-19th century, both before and after independence from Britain in 1947. Revenue stamps were issued by the central government in New Delhi as well as by individual states and princely states. They have been used to pay taxes on documents, transactions, and goods. While design and purposes have changed over time, India continues to rely heavily on revenue stamps to collect taxes to this day.

JammuandKashmirstillhasitsownrevenuestamps
tothisdayduetoitsspecialstatusinarticle370of
theIndianconstitution.Someotherstateswhich
werecreatedafterindependencesuchasAssamand
MadhyaBharatalsoissuedstamps.
Meanwhile,manyrevenueissuesbothbeforeand
afterindependenceexistwithprovincialorstate
overprints.Overprintsareknownfromabout75

FrenchandPortugueseIndia
FrenchIndiahadseparaterevenuestampsuntil1954.Afteritbecamepart
ofIndia,Pondicherryissuedseveralrevenues.InitiallyFrenchIndiastamps
weresurchargedinIndiancurrency,andlaterseparatestampswereissued
inscribedeitherTimbreMobileorTimbreQuittance.LaterPondicherry
AusedIndian12Anna
overprintedIndianrevenueswiththenameofthestate,annastampswere
stampedpaperdated
usedbeforeandafterindependencedenominationslike2annas,whichwill
1938.
begraduallybecomepartofrevenue,laterdenominatioslike10rsand20rs
inlate70sprofussinglybuttheintroductionofthethesestampsin1978and
later,higherdenominationslike50rsand100rswerehavingthehighestcapabilityinrevenueandduties
laterandthiscontinuedtothe1980,PortugueseIndiaalsoissueditsownrevenues.In1954,Dadraand

NagarHaveliwasliberatedfromPortugueseIndiaanditissueda
singlerevenuestamp.AftertheliberationofGoain1961,
PortugueseIndianrevenueswereoverprintedwithnewvaluesin
IndiancurrencyforuseasCourtFeeorRevenuestamps.Later
variousIndianrevenueswereoverprintedGoa,Daman&Diu
foruseintheformerPortugueseterritories.Thiscontinueduntil
the1970s.
