Aims:
The course outline will introduce students to different methods of analysing
language and discourse on different patterns. This course further aims at fairly
advanced ideas related to linguistic variation, language used at different places
and consequently analysing it at different levels.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students who successfully complete the course unit and assignments will be able
to do the following:

Get awareness about different approaches of discourse analysis.


Learn to apply different models of discourse analysis in analysing
language.
Will enhance their knowledge about discourse patterns, and differences in
medical, educational and journalistic discourse.
Apply the knowledge in research oriented fields of discourse analysis and
conversation analysis.

Curriculum Contents:
The unit will introduce students to the basis of knowledge needed in order to
appreciate the field of discourse analysis, critically read CDA articles and conduct
a research study in the field of discourse analysis.
Session 1: Introduction, What is Discourse analysis and its scope, Different
models of discourse analysis
Session 2: Spoken and written discourse, approaches to discourse analysis,
Approaches to discourse analysis, Conversation analysis
Session 3: Formal links in discourse, Links beyond formal links

Session 4: Two views of discourse structure: as product and as process


Session 5: Approaches of developing discourse in language learning and
teaching
Session 6: Discourse analysis and qualitative research
Session 7: Exploring the tutor conversation
Session 8: Analysing newspaper language: context, text and consequences
Session 9: Concept and tools of linguistic analysis
Session 10: Discursive practices and producing print journalism
Session 11: CDA and Social practices, journalism and material world
Session 12: Critical discourse analysis of war reporting
Teaching and Learning Methods:
Formal lectures and discussions with accompanying pre-reading and activity
sessions will be conducted most of time.
