PART "B"
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND FINANCING
9. Location of Project :
District D.I.Khan - D.I.Khan Division
(Please refer to Annexure I for Location Map)
(a) Give name of place and administrative district in which located;
The Bridge sites are located at a distance of about 25 & 30 kilometers from D.I.Khan
and at km 23 & 27 on Ara Bigwani Gandi Umar Khan road District D.I.Khan.
(b) Indicate total area to be served.
Location. The project will serve approximately 240 square kilometer area on both sides of the Ara Bagwani
Gandi Umar Khan road including Villages: Ara Basti, Haji Mora, Kau Habib, Chah Fiqir Wala, Fateh, Luk, Ruk
Nau, Dakhna, Bagwani Janubi, Naurang Dau, Sheru Nau, Mapal, Naurang, Utra, Bhunar, Taj, Garoka, Khudka,
Mehar Beg, Garah Dad Shimali, Garah Sona Shah, Khawar, Mitthi, Mehmud Bhatti, Siwak, Balu Khurd, Balu,
Garah Gamah, Garah Nihal, Ghulam Haider, Hayat Jarh, Jumma Sharif, Chhiari, Shamir, Jhandi, Garah Mian
Fateh Muhammad, Garah Bisharat and Gandi Umar Khan.
Topography. The district can be broadly characterized by plain areas, wide streams & Nullahs and sandy
deserts of low altitudes. The altitude varies from below 300 m to over 450 m. The Looni Nullah and Swan
Nullah are situated in South West side of the district.
Soils. Different types of parent materials such as residual and colluvial materials derived from local weathering
of bedrock, alluvial materials, materials sedimented by rivers in the past and materials eroded and deposited by
wind, constitute the soils of the district.
The soil depth varies slightly in the project area but most of the soil is composed of alternate layers of silty
sand, silty clay and pure sand.
The geological studies results:
I)
CBR
3 % to 10 %
II)
Bridge Site
Mostly silty, clayey and sandy strata.
\\00\H\10000\100\390\10047\390\390\Bridges at Km 23 27 ABGU D.I.Khan (171199).xls
Climate. The district has a severe climate and is very hot during summer and moderate cold in winter.
Hydrology. Precipitation is received as rain. Most of the rainfall is not drained out of the area due to very mild
slopes and due to the well known Rath Khoi system in the area. Water is collected and stored for a long time in
the small dam like Rath Khoies. During moon soon season and immediately after the moon soon season when
the floods occur in the Indus River most of the area is drownded in the floods.
EXISTING INSTITUTIONAL SETUP
Communication and Works Department. This agency is responsible for planning, designing, construction
and maintenance of the provincial road network. In D.I.Khan district, C&W Department is represented by an
Executive Engineer. He is assisted by sub-divisional officers (SDOs) each supported by Sub-engineers. Within
the project the Executive Engineer is responsible for planning and implementation of provincial roads and
bridges.
10.
DESCRIPTION AND JUSTIFICATION
Justification. 'This project is included in A.D.P. 1999 - 2000 and will solve the long lasting demand of the area
and is in line with the Plan objectives of socio-economic uplift of the area.
Further more, the project is aimed to promote agricultural development in area of D.I.Khan District to bring
benefit the mainstream of the National Economy.
There are very few roads in the project area and travel is particularly difficult during the monsoon season due to
floods, specially when bridges are not constructed on these roads.
The project will result in: (i) establishment and strengthening of Social & Community development, (ii) boost
agricultural production and the incomes of populations living in poverty; (iv) improve access to market from
rural communities through improvement of provincial and feeder roads; and (v) increase opportunities for
employment in the project area, particularly in off-farm activities.
