Savior

of the Nations,

Come

Christmas at Luther 2015

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Christmas at Luther, a time to

announce with great joy the birth of the Christ child.
This years theme, Savior of the Nations, Come, is the name of a hymn
written by the colleges namesake, Martin Luther. Luther extolled music
as one of Gods greatest gifts to humanity. We agree, as evidenced by
the talented 627 student musicians you will hear today who come from
across the United States and around the world.
The theme invites us to celebrate the gift of the global community.
The Christ child comes as savior of all nations, all peoples. At Luther,
students from many nations share in the life of faith and learning
together on campus. Seventy years ago, Knut Gunderson of Norway
arrived on the Luther campus, our first undergraduate international
student. Today, 147 students from 65 countries attend Luther College,
6.3 percent of our total enrollment. Their contributions and insights
enrich the community in profound ways.
Each year nearly 500 Luther students venture out to study in places
around the world. Luther ranks among the top baccalaureate colleges
in the United States for the percentage of students who study abroad
prior to graduation. More than two-thirds of Luther students participate
in our international studies programs.
The rich diversity on our campus and our strong commitment to global
learning experiences allow Luther College to fulfill its mission to move
beyond immediate interests and present knowledge into a larger
world.
What good news that God has come to dwell with us and to love
the whole world. May that love, expressed magnificently through
Christmas at Luther, fill your heart with peace and joy.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Paula J. Carlson, Ph.D.,

President

Christmas
at Luther 2015

Thursday, December 3, 5:45 p.m.

Friday, December 4, 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.
Saturday, December 5, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, December 6, 2:30 p.m.
Center for Faith and Life
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa

Luther College will be audio-recording all performances.

We ask that all electronic devices be turned off and silenced.
No recording devices or cameras are permitted.
If for any reason you need assistance during the performance,
please find an usher, located near each entrance.
We request that the audience hold its applause until the
completion of the concert.

Enhancing the theme, Savior of the Nations, Come, this years backdrop
focuses our attention upon the Christ figure, bringing light and salvation
to the nations. Like Josephs coat of many colors, the Christ figure
is cloaked in a brilliant garment that displays the Saviors love for
all of humanity. Throughout the building you will encounter 66 flags
representing the nations of all current Luther students, and further
reminding us of Gods redemptive love for all the peoples of the Earth.
Special thanks to Karen Martin-Schramm, the Office of the President, and
the American Legion for their guidance and implementation of proper
flag protocol with the displaying of all the nations flags for this years
celebration of Christmas at Luther.

Program

Savior of the Nations,

Come: Prologue
arr. Jennaya Robison 96

Savior of the nations, come,

Come, Thou long expected Jesus.
O come, O come Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel.
Savior of the nations, come,
Christ our God to earth descending.
Marvel now, O heavn and earth,
God has chosen such a birth.

Wake, Awake, For Night is

Flying
arr. F. Melius Christiansen
Nordic Choir

Wake, awake, for night is flying,

The watchmen on the heights are crying,
Awake Jerusalem, arise!
Midnights solemn hour is tolling,
His chariot wheels are nearer rolling,
Prepare, ye virgins wise.
Rise up with willing feet,
Go forth, the Bridegroom meet,
Hallelujah!

The rabid wolf wanted to bite her,

But Almighty God knew how to defend
her.
He willed to make her pure,
Sin this virgin did not embrace.

Bear through the night your well trimd

light,
Speed forth to join the marriage rite.
Hear Thy praise, O Lord ascending,
From tongues of men and angels,
Blending with harps and lutes and
psaltery,
By Thy pearly gates in wonder.
We stand, and swell the voice of
thunder,
In bursts of choral melody:
Hallelujah!

The one who is born is the Great

Monarch:
Christ the Patriarch clothed in flesh.
He has redeemed us by making Himself
small,
Though He was infinite, He became
finite.

No vision ever brought,

No ear hath ever caught,
Such bliss and joy:
We raise the song,
We swell the throng,
To praise Thee ages all along.
Hallelujah!

The riverbank is protected;

God has kept the wolf
From our ewe lamb.

He comes to give life to the dead;

He comes to repair the fall of all
mankind.
This Child is the light of day;
He is the Lamb of whom St. John spoke.
I saw a thousand Angels who were
singing,
Flying around, chanting in a thousand
voices,
Saying to the shepherds: Glory in
Heaven
And peace on earth, for Jesus is born!
Now we have what we desire:
Let us go together to present Him gifts.
Let us all give Him our will,
For He came as our equal.

Narration: Psalm 67:1-5

Savior of the Nations,

Come

arr. Gregory Peterson 83

Audience is invited to stand and sing.
Savior of the Nations, come;
Virgins Son, make here your home.
Marvel now, O heavn and earth:
God has chosen such a birth.

Program

Not by human flesh and blood,

but the mystic Breath of God,
was the Word of God made flesh,
fruit of woman, blossom fresh.
Wondrous birthO wondrous Child
From His throne, a virgin mild!
Very God, and Marys Son,
eager now his race to run!
From Gods heart the Savior speeds,
back to God His pathway leads;
out to vanquish deaths command,
back to reign at Gods right hand.
Now your manger, shining bright,
hallows night with newborn light.
Night cannot this light subdue;
let our faith shine ever new.
Praise we sing to Christ the Lord,
Virgins Son, incarnate Word!
To the holy Trinity
praise we sing eternally!

I Wonder As I Wander
arr. Jennaya Robison 96
Aurora

I wonder as I wander, out under the sky,

How Jesus the Savior did come for to
die,
For poor onry people like you and like I.
I wonder as I wander, out under the sky.
When Mary birthed Jesus, twas in a cow
stall,
With wise men and farmers and
shepherds and all.
But high in Gods heaven a stars light
did fall,
And the promise of ages, it then did
recall,
Promised to save us all.
If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky or a bird on the wing,
Or all of Gods angels in heavn to sing,
He surely could have it cause He was
the King.

O My Dear Heart
Eleanor Daley (1955)
Cantorei

O my dear heart, young Jesus sweet,

prepare thy cradle in my spreit,
and I shall rock thee in my heart,
And nevermore from Thee depart.
Balulalow.
But I shall praise Thee evermore,
With songes sweet unto thy gloir.
The knees of my heart shall I bow,
And sing that right Balulalow.
Balulalow.

Lullaby (from Three

Nocturnes)
Daniel Elder (1986)
Collegiate Chorale, piano

Lullaby, sing lullaby,

the day is far behind you.
The moon sits high atop the sky,
now let sweet slumber find you.
Away,
the day is done, and gone the sun
that lit the world so brightly.
the earths aglow with speckled show
of twinkling stars so sprightly.
Away,
where the sunlight is beaming
through a deep, cloudless blue,
and the treetops are gleaming
with a fresh morning dew;
where the mountains are shining
at the meadows below,
in a brilliant white lining
of new-fallen snow.
Close your eyes, breathe in the night;
a softer bed Ill make you.
The trial is done, all danger gone;
now let far dreaming take you.
Away,
Child of wonder reclining,
kings and shepherds rejoice.
High above, stars are shining,
bringing peace through Your voice.
Now the dark night approaches,
Yet so soft and so mild.
Lullaby, sing lullaby,
sleep now my child.

Glory to God in the highest

And peace to His people on earth.

Joy to the World

arr. Mack Wilberg

Audience is invited to stand and sing.
Verse 1: All
Joy to the world, The Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing...
Verse 2: Women
Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let all their songs employ,
While fields and floods,
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Verse 3: Men
No more let sin and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make
His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Verse 4: All
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love...

Narration: Isaiah 52:7

How Lovely are the
Messengers (from Saint
Paul)

Felix Mendelssohn (180947)

Combined Choirs, Symphony Orchestra
How lovely are the messengers
that preach us the gospel of peace.
To all the nations is gone forth the sound
of their words,
throughout all the lands their glad
tidings.

6. This Little Babe (from

A Ceremony of Carols)
Benjamin Britten (19131976)
Cantorei, harp

This little Babe so few days old,

Is come to rifle Satans fold;
All hell doth at His presence quake,
Though He Himself for cold do shake;
For in this weak and unarmed wise
The gates of hell He will surprise.
With tears He fights and wins the field,
His naked breast stands for a shield;
His battering shot are babish cries,
His arrows looks of weeping eyes,
His martial ensigns Cold and Need,
And feeble Flesh his warriors steed.
His camp is pitched in a stall,
His bulwark but a broken wall;
The crib His trench, haystalks His
stakes,
Of shepherds He His muster makes;
And thus, as sure His foe to wound,
The angels trumps alarum sound.
My soul, with Christ join thou in fight;
Stick to the tents that He hath pight.
Within His crib is surest ward;
This little Babe will be thy guard.
If thou wilt foil thy foes with joy,
then flit not from this heavenly Boy.

Allelujah Sasa

Ben Allaway (1958)

Text: sung in Swahili and English
Cathedral Choir, percussion
Shall we go see the Child?
Now, now!
The little King is waiting for us!
Get going, now!
Take heart!
The little King, born for us!
Hurry, hurry, dont delay!
He is born!
The angels just told us!
The angels in the heavens said,
look for Him in a manger.
The star, the star, follow it.
Alleluyah, Praise God on your way!

Program

Walking in the light of the one star!

Where is it leading us?
Wheres our little King?
Can a baby save us?
Trust in Him, believe!
Yes? Really? Okay, okay!
We must trust.
Okay, okay, now!
Right!

O children of the forest free, O sons of

Manitou
The holy Child of earth and heaven is
born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant boy who
brings you beauty peace and joy.
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

Walking in the light of the one star

There is the star over a manger!
In His manger He lays.
Only a few more steps to get there now!
Til we see the Son of God!

Nol Ayisyen
(A Haitian Nol)

He is born! Alleluyah! He is born!

Alleluyah! God is great! Alleluyah!

Huron Carol

arr. Andy Hillhouse

Norsemen, guitar, pennywhistle,
and violin
Twas in the moon of wintertime when all
the birds had fled
That mighty Gitchi Manitou sent angel
choirs instead;
Before their light the stars grew dim and
wandering hunters heard the hymn,
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.
Within a lodge of broken bark the tender
babe was found;
A ragged robe of rabbit skin enwrapped
his beauty round
But as the hunter braves drew nigh the
angel song rang loud and high
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.
The earliest moon of wintertime is not so
round and fair
As was the ring of glory on the helpless
infant there.
The chiefs from far before Him knelt with
gifts of fox and beaver pelt.
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

Emile Desamours (1941)

Text: sung in Haitian Creole
Aurora
It was in Bethlehem,
A little corner of Judea,
That Mary had a baby boy
At midnight in a stable.
He was the Son of God
And He was the King of Kings.
Since I was a little child
Ive known this story.
There were three wise kings
Who followed a great star
With gifts in their hands
To come worship the Child.
And they were quite amazed
When they saw little Jesus
Lying between a cow
And a donkey.
Hear that, my friends!
Noel is a strange story indeed!
Jesus, Son of God, King of Kings,
Doesnt even have a cradle.
He sleeps on the straw among animal.
Oh my!
They called Him Wonderful,
Counselor, Mighty God;
The Everlasting Father, too;
And He was the Prince of Peace.
Both shepherds and wise men
Bowed down to worship Him.
They gave Him gifts
According to what they had.

Program

Back then, if wed been there,

Wed have done something fitting,
Wed have offered Him music
Of the best Haitian kind.
Wed have brought drums,
Manniboulas, vaccins, maracas
With fine banjo strums
Wed have charmed little Jesus.
Jesus, Jesus, our little Jesus,
We love you greatly.
You bring peace to all people
And you offer us grace.
Noel, Noel, Noel, long live Noell!

Angels, from the Realms

of Glory
arr. Mark Patterson
orch. Brooke Joyce
Audience is invited to stand and sing.
Angels, from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight oer all the earth;
You who sang creations story,
Now proclaim Messiahs birth:
Refrain:
Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!
Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching oer your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;
Refrain
Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great desire of nations,
You have seen His natal star;
Refrain

Before the Marvel

of the Night

Carl Schalk (1929)

Cathedral Choir, organ, strings,
and Luther Ringers
Before the marvel of this night,
adoring, fold your wings and bow;
then tear the sky apart with light
and with your news the world endow.
Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace,
that fear and death and sorrow cease:
sing peace; sing peace; sing gift of
peace;
sing peace; sing gift of peace!
Awake the sleeping world with song:
this is the day the Lord has made.
Assemble here, celestial throng,
in royal splendor come arrayed.
Give earth a glimpse of heavnly bliss,
a teasing taste of what they miss:
sing bliss; sing bliss; sing endless bliss;
sing bliss; sing endless bliss!
The love that we have always known,
our constant joy and endless light,
now to the loveless world be shown,
now break upon its deathly night.
Into one song compress the love
that rules our universe above:
sing love; sing love; sing God is love;
sing love; sing God is love!

Where Riches is
Everlastingly

Bob Chilcott (1955)

Collegiate Chorale, percussion
Into this world this day did come
Jesus Christ both God and Man,
Lord and servant in one person,
Born of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
I pray you be merry and sing with me
In worship of Christs nativity.
He that was rich, without a need
Appeared in this world in right poor
weed
To make us that were poor indeed,
Rich without any need truly.

Program

A stable His Chamber, a crib was His

bed,
He had not a pillow to lay under His
head;
With maidens milk that babe was fed,
In poor clothes was lapped the Lord
Almighty.
A noble lesson here is us taught,
To set all worldly riches at naught,
But pray we that we may be thither
brought
Where riches is everlastingly.

Serenity (O Magnum
Mysterium)
Ola Gjeilo (1978)
Text: sung in Latin
Nordic Choir, cello

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born
Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!

The First Nowell

arr. Mack Wilberg

Combined choirs, Symphony Orchestra
The First Nowell, the Angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields
as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their
sheep
On a cold winters night that was so
deep.
Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavnly Lord
That hath made heavn and earth of
nought
And with His blood our lives has bought.
Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

Narration:
Revelation 22: 1-2
Antiphon (from Five
Mystical Songs)

Ralph Vaughan Williams (18721958)

Combined choirs, Symphony Orchestra
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!
The heavens are not too high,
His praise may thither fly:
The earth is not too low,
His praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!
The church with Psalms must shout.
No door can keep them out:
But above all, the heart
Must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!
