Please read this information carefully, as it contains details of what your
interview will include and what will be expected of you.

1. Applicant Selection Statement

It is the College’s policy to use an interview as the primary means of assessing

your suitability for your course of choice. The College believes that the
opportunity provided by interview for you to meet and talk with staff and
student representatives affords the most effective means of taking full account
of all your skills and characteristics.

The College does not make decisions regarding suitability solely on the basis
of information available from an application form (academic qualifications,
personal statement and reference) where an interview is possible. The College
reserves the right to not invite applicants for interview in certain circumstances
including cases where a candidate’s application form indicates that they are
ineligible for consideration or where the programme of choice has no places to
offer.

You will be considered for entry if you have any qualification at a suitable level
for entry as identified on individual course documents. Should you wish to
defer you will be treated on an equal basis to other applicants.

2. Interview details

When you report to Reception either a student on the course or the admissions
tutor will meet you.

You should expect to remain in the College for a maximum of 2 hours.

2
Your interview will last approximately 20 minutes.

You will be interviewed by at least two people including a member of the

course staff and sometimes a student on the course.

You may be interviewed within a group situation.

The interview will be held in a studio setting. If you have particular

requirements to support your interview please inform the college before you
attend an interview.

On the Broadcasting Foundation Degree courses you may be asked to sit a

short maths and physics assessment.

3. Interview criteria

The interview is a key element of the selection process. It should be a free and
frank exchange that enables you to establish the appropriateness of the course
for your needs. The course staff will evaluate your suitability for the course
through the following criteria:

• Potential professional ability in design or communication, demonstrated

through a portfolio of evidence

• Evidence of intellectual curiosity, personal commitment and personal

enthusiasms

• Ability to investigate, structure and evaluate information

• Ability to communicate effectively in visual, verbal and written forms

3
• Analytical and problem solving abilities

• Ability to make reasoned arguments

• Ability to initiate and deliver projects

• Awareness of issues and debates within the discipline/profession

• Awareness of particular features of Ravensbourne programmes

• Awareness of possible career outcomes

• Confidence with IT, and the ability to apply it imaginatively

• An aptitude for team-working

• An ability to use time effectively

The course staff who interview you are required to make notes during your
interview. Other colleagues involved in the selection process will share this
written report.

4. Presenting a portfolio of your work

You will be expected to show some of your work during the interview – please
remember to bring the work with you. The admissions tutors like to see a range
of work, which might include:

• Photographic prints

• Video material on VHS

• CD ROMs

• Web pages

4
With Broadcasting CDs or videos we understand that you may not have the
access to good quality cameras and edit facilities. We are concerned about the
work you have made with the kit you have and what ideas you would have if
you were given the opportunities to use facilities that Ravensbourne can
provide.

We are interested in people who think creatively. Journals are a good way to
show us your ideas and thought processes at interview.

Finally: think about how you can demonstrate a passion and commitment for
the subject that you want to study.

6. Accreditation of Prior (Experiential)

Learning

If you wish to transfer into the course from another programme it will be
necessary to undertake a review of the your attainment in order to confirm that
you are suitably prepared to enter the course at a later start point and that the
credit you have achieved elsewhere can contribute to your Ravensbourne
qualification aim.

Where you have worked for some time and gained relevant experience it may
be possible gain entry to courses without the academic qualifications for entry
as identified in the Course Document. In this circumstance The Admissions Tutor
may take account of other forms of evidence when deciding your suitability for
the course.

7. International Applications

The College accepts a broad range of UK equivalent qualifications for entry.

6
• Drawing

• Project outcomes/flat artwork

• Drawn storyboards incorporating a maximum of 20 shots

• Journals and sketch books

• That extra exciting project that may not be complete but demonstrates
how you are working an idea through

• Evidence of influences and research in your study

Please note that candidates applying for the Broadcasting Operations

Production and Broadcasting Post Production Foundation Degrees are normally
expected to bring video material on DVD or VHS of a maximum of two minutes
in length.

5. Interview Tips

We are interested in work created on courses of study but also on work that you
have made in personal time or within a work context.

We are interested in why you are applying to Ravensbourne and what you know
about the course that you are applying for.

With visual portfolios, presentation is important but we are principally looking

for an insight into the way that you think about ideas and your work.

Drawing is an important basic communication within design. We want to see

not only the level of your skill but also your understanding of the different types
of drawing.

5
We usually ask applicants from the European Union to attend an interview at
the College. If you live further away we do not expect you to travel to the UK
for interview, but you will need to send examples of your work to the College,
either originals, photographs, videos or CD-ROMs. If a number of applicants
from your country are able to meet at a pre-determined time and place, it may
be possible for a member of academic staff to travel to your country to conduct
interviews.

If English is your second language, the Admissions Tutor must assure

themselves of your ability in conversational English through the interview itself,
even where that is by telephone or e-mail. The college expects you to be
competent to the level of TOEFL 550 (paper based tests) or 213+ (computer
based tests) or IELTS standard 6 points. You will be expected to participate in
discussions with other students and take part in presentations as well as follow
lectures from the beginning of the course.

8. Evidence of Qualifications

All offers are conditional on you presenting evidence of their declared

qualifications at enrolment. Should you not be able to provide the
documentation or fail to achieve the qualification expected, Admissions Tutors
can exercise discretion in reviewing their decision. All such cases must be
reviewed and a further Record of Interview Form completed in line with the AP
(E) L guidelines specified above.

9. Meeting with students on Course

After your interview has finished, you are encouraged to meet with a member
of the current student group.

The purpose of this meeting is to:

• Provide you with an opportunity to find out more about the Course

7
• Enable you to ask questions or raise issues that relate to the student
experience of the Course

10. What to do if you have a disability?

We seek to ensure that disability, learning difficulties and particular needs are
not barriers to selection at Ravensbourne. If you have a disability that may
affect your ability to attend or participate effectively in the interview please let
us know. We will provide speedy and positive support to enable the positive
progress of your application. A declaration of disability will not disadvantage
your application to any course at the College.
