This document contains 22 problems related to concepts in real analysis such as continuity, limits, and uniformly continuous functions. The problems cover topics like checking the continuity of various functions, proving limits, properties of continuous functions, and determining whether sequences are Cauchy sequences. They ask the reader to prove statements about functions, find examples of certain types of functions, and determine intervals where functions are or aren't uniformly continuous.

Assignment 3, Monsoon Semester 2015

1. Check the ( left / right) continuity of the following functions:

(a) f (x) = b x5 c, x R.
(b) f (x) = x2 if x Q and f (x) = x if x 6 Q.
(c) f (x) = x if x Q and f (x) = 1 x if x 6 Q.
1

(d) f (x) = e x for x 6= 0.

2. Let f (x) = 0 if x 6= 0 and f (0) = 1. Prove that lim f (x) = 0 but there exists a sequence {xn }
x0

such that xn 0 and f (xn ) 9 1.

3. Find ( if it exists) lim f (x), lim g(y) and lim g(f (x)) for the following functions f : R R.
x1

y2

x1

(a) f (x) = 2; g(y) = 3 if y 6= 2, g(2) = 0

(b) f (x) = 2 if x Q and f (x) = 2x if x 6 Q; g as in (a).
4. Prove that if f (x) q as x p and g(y) r as y q, and if f (x) 6= q for some x in a
deleted neighbourhood of p, then lim g(f (x)) = r.
xp

5. If {xn } is a Cauchy sequence in a set A and if f is continuous on A, is {f (xn )} a Cauchy

sequence?
6. Let f : R R be a continuous function such that lim f (x) and
x

lim f (x) exist (and are

finite). Prove that f is a bounded function.

7. Prove that if f : R R is continuous then Z(f ) = {x : f (x) = 0} is a closed set in R.
8. Suppose that f : R R is continuous, and that for each y R , there is at most one x such
that f (x) = y. Show that f is monotonic.
9. Suppose that f : R Q is continuous. Show that f is a constant function.
10. Suppose that f : [0, 1] [0, 1] is continuous. Show that there is a point x [0, 1] such that
f (x) = x. Is the result true if f : (0, 1) (0, 1) is continuous.
11. A function f : R R satisfies |f (x) f (y)| K|x y| for some K R. Prove that f is
continuous everywhere on R. Is f uniformly continuous?
12. Let f : R R be a function such that f (x + y) = f (x) + f (y), x, y R. Prove that, if f is
continuous at 0, f is continuous everywhere on R. Is f uniformly continuous?
13. Let f : R R be a function such that f (x + y) = f (x) f (y), x, y R. Prove that, if f is
continuous at 0, f is continuous everywhere on R.
14. Let f : R R be a function such that f (xy) = f (x) f (y), x, y R. Prove that, if f is
continuous at 1, f is continuous at all x 6= 0. Give examples of such a functions f1 and f2 such
that f1 is continuous at 0 while f2 is not continuous at 0 .
15. Let f : R R be a function such that f (xy) = f (x) + f (y), x, y R. Prove that, if f is
continuous at 1, f is continuous at all x > 0. Give an example of such a function.

16. Let f (x) = x sin( x1 ), x (0, 1). Is f uniformly continuous?

17. Find, if possible, an interval I for each of the following functions, where the function is continuous but not uniformly continuous.
(a) f (x) =
(b) f (x) =

1
x

x2

(c) f (x) = x
(d) f (x) =

1
x2

(e) f (x) = tan x

18. Suppose that f : R R and g : R R are uniformly continuous. Is it true that f g is uniformly
continuous.
19. Suppose that f : R R is continuous and periodic ( that is, f (x + p) = f (x), x R for some
p R). Then prove that f is both bounded and uniformly continuous.
20. If {xn } is a Cauchy sequence in a set A and if f is uniformly continuous on A, is {f (xn )} a
Cauchy sequence?
21. Suppose that f : R R and g : R R are continuous. If f (x) = g(x) x Q, is it true that
f = g?
22. Prove that, f in Question No 12, satisfies f (tx) = tf (x), t R. Hence f (x) = ax for some
a R.
