1.2 ZXSDR R8863 Position in Radio Access Networks
The ZXSDR R8863, designed on ZTEs unified RRU platform, is an outdoor remote radio
unit that provides three Tx channels and six Rx channels, and supports three sectors. With
compact size and light weight, the ZXSDR R8863 supports different radio access modes,
including GSM single mode, UMTS single mode, and GSM/UMTS dual mode.
Figure 1-2 illustrates the position of the ZXSDR R8863 (RRU) in radio access networks.

Chapter 1 Product Overview
Figure 1-2 ZXSDR R8863 Position in Radio Access Networks
The ZXSDR R8863 is integrated with a BBU to implement the logical functions of a
complete base station (BTS/Node B), such as radio transmission and radio channel
control in a coverage area.
1.3 Features
The ZXSDR R8863 has the following features:
l
l
l
l
Compared with a base station using three single-Tx RRU or two dual-Tx RRU, a base
station using the ZXSDR R8863 is highly integrated, requires smaller installation area
and less weight bearing capacity, and can be easily installed.
The natural cooling design reduces power consumption and noise pollution.
The unified hardware platform and network management system greatly reduces the
network maintenance workload.
The unified SDR multi-mode hardware platform is adaptive to future network evolution.
It supports dynamic GSM/UMTS carrier configuration through software and reuses
existing equipment to the greatest extent during network upgrade. Two ZXSDR R8863
RRUs can be deployed for a base station to support LTE, resulting in a reduction of
evolution cost and protecting the network investment.
1.4 Functions
The ZXSDR R8863 provides the following functions:
l
Supports 900 M/1800 M/2100 MHz frequencies.

3.1 Operation and Maintenance Modes
The ZXSDR R8863 supports remote and local operation and maintenance modes.
Remote Operation and Maintenance
ZTEs NetNumen U31 Unified Element Management System (EMS) is used to operate and
maintain the ZXSDR R8863 remotely. The EMS connects to the BSC/RNC/BBU to which
the ZXSDR R8863 is connected through an Abis/Iub/CPRI interface. Figure 3-1 shows the
remote operation and maintenance mode.
Figure 3-1 Remote Operation and Maintenance
In remote operation and maintenance mode, the EMS connects to an NE through TCP/IP.
The EMS can be used to operate and maintain multiple base stations.

ZXSDR R8863 Product Description
Local Operation and Maintenance
In local operation and maintenance mode, an LMT (PC) is connected to the ZXSDR R8863
with an Ethernet cable, see Figure 3-2.
Figure 3-2 Local Operation and Maintenance
The LMT is used for local operation and maintenance of an individual base station. It
supports basic operations on the base station, such as power query, power increase and
decrease, and calibration.
3.2 Operation and Maintenance Functions
The NetNumen U31 Unified Element Management System (EMS) provides a GUI that
displays the information of all NEs in the entire network on a topology map. A user can
view performance data, alarm information, and configuration data of a specific NE, and
operate and maintain multiple NEs of the same type on the topology map.
The following operation and maintenance functions are available in the EMS:
l
Configuration management
The configuration management supports dynamic and static configuration of base
stations, such as the addition, query, deletion, modification, and data consistency
check of physical and radio resources.
Security management
The security management ensures that only authorized users can perform permitted
operations on base stations.
Performance management
The performance management supports performance analysis, calling trace, and
signaling trace.
Version management
The version management allows users to view hardware and software versions in
base stations and download latest versions for software upgrade.
Fault management

Chapter 3 Operation and Maintenance
The fault management includes alarm management and diagnostic tests. By using
the fault management functions, maintenance personnel can monitor the operational
statuses of base stations and collect the information of board and link faults in real
time for fault analysis and equipment maintenance.
