Note: This is a tentative roadmap only. Some activities may be executed in parallel to save
implementation time, depending on the nature of customers business and projects.

Phase 1: Project Initiation & Gap Analysis


a. Purpose
The purpose of this phase is to start the project, provide CMMI awareness training and conduct
a thorough gap analysis against the requirements of CMMI Maturity Level 3. It also includes
detailed planning for the closure of gaps.

b. Responsibilities of Business Beam


Business Beam will be responsible for following activities:

Conduct CMMI awareness training session for the Customer


Conduct Gap Analysis in detail
Plan for next steps to close the identified gaps
Identify the list of processes and related documents that needs to improved or
developed

c. Responsibilities of the Customer


Following are the responsibilities of the Customer.

Assign CMMI Implementation Project Manager (internal) and his/her backup. Both
individuals must have very good knowledge about process improvement frameworks
(preferably CMMI) with at least 5+ years or technical experience
Develop and empower SEPG (Software Engineering Process Group) that will be
responsible for ensuring the development of all processes. Composed of line
practitioners who have varied skills, the group will act as the central group for everyone
in the organization who is involved with process improvement. The SEPG must have at
least 3 to 6 members, from various functions.
Facilitate Business Beam consultants
Provide access to the required information

d. Phase Deliverables

CMMI awareness training


Gap analysis report
Gap closure plan containing proposed timeframe and list of processes to be developed

Phase 2: Process Definition & Review


a. Purpose
Process definition is one of the most important phases of CMMI implementation. The purpose is
to develop and document processes of the organization, comprehensively covering all the
requirements of CMMI for Development Maturity Level 3.

b. Responsibilities of Business Beam


Following are the responsibilities of Business Beam.

Interact with the Customer team members and develop processes (and related
documents) for the Customer, in accordance to the requirements of CMMI Maturity
Level 3
Provide training to the Customer team members on the newly developed processes as
well as requirements of CMMI

c. Responsibilities of the Customer


The Customer will be responsible for following activities:

Facilitate Business Beam consultants


Provide access to the required information
Approve the newly developed processes
Own the newly developed processes

d. Phase Deliverables

Approved set of organizational processes and templates conforming all requirements of


CMMI Maturity Level 3

e. Expected Duration

8 to 10 weeks

Phase 3: Process Institutionalization


a. Purpose
The purpose of this phase is to implement the CMMI processes on selected projects and ensure
that the organization has adopted them in its culture.

b. Responsibilities of Business Beam


Business Beam will be responsible for following activities:

Assist the Customer in selecting the right set of projects for implementation (at least 4)
Provide assistance to the Customer teams in implementing processes; suggest
improvement / workaround in case of any implementation difficulty
Conduct readiness check (SCAMPI Class C Appraisal) to ensure that the project is for
further Appraisal. This activity will be done onsite.
Assist the Customer in closing the identified implementation gaps

c. Responsibilities of the Customer


Following are the responsibilities of the Customer.

Select projects for process implementation, as per the guidance provided by Business
Beam
Implement all CMMI processes on the selected project with the help of SEPG as internal
consultants for the implementation teams
Identify further improvement opportunities
Communication implementation issues to Business Beam
Facilitate Business Beam consultants
Provide access to the required information
Close the gap identified in the readiness check (Class C Appraisal)

d. Phase Deliverables

Project records for the selected projects


SCAMPI Class C Appraisal Report
Revised and improved set of process assets

e. Expected Duration

Depends on the duration of selected projects (at least 8 weeks, if the projects are of
shorter duration)

Phase 4: Appraisal Readiness Check


a. Purpose
The purpose of this phase is to ensure that the Customer organization is ready for the final
Appraisal.

b. Responsibilities of Business Beam


Business Beam will be responsible for following activities:

Conduct CMMI Institute Authorized Introduction to CMMI Training for the Appraisal
Team Members (3 days)
Conduct CMMI SCAMPI Class B Appraisal
Help the Customer in closing the identified implementation related gaps

c. Responsibilities of the Customer


Following are the responsibilities of the Customer.

Nominate appraisal team members for the training


Provide all assistance required to conduct SCAMPI Class B Appraisal
Identify improvement opportunities
Facilitate Business Beam consultants
Provide access to the required information
Close the gap identified in the SCAMPI Class B Appraisal

d. Phase Deliverables

SCAMPI Class B Appraisal Report


Revised and improved set of process assets, if applicable

4 weeks

Phase 5: CMMI SCAMPI Class A Appraisal


a. Purpose
This the final phase where the client will be appraised against the practices of CMMI-Dev 1.3
requirements. CMMI SCAMPI Class A appraisal will be performed and the results of Class A
appraisal will be submitted to the CMMI Institute.

b. Responsibilities of Business Beam


Business Beam will be responsible for following activities:

Register CMMI SCAMPI Class A Appraisal with the CMMI Institute


Conduct Appraisal Team Member (ATM) training (2 days)
Conduct SCAMPI A Appraisal
Report results to the CMMI Institute

c. Responsibilities of the Customer


Following are the responsibilities of the Customer.

Assist Business Beam is conducting CMMI SCAMPI Class A Appraisal


Facilitate Business Beam consultants
Provide access to the required information

d. Phase Deliverables

ATM Training
CMMI SCAMPI Class A Appraisal Report & Presentation
Results Report to the CMMI Institute
