In high school science classes, students are often encouraged to
memorize the first 20 or 30 elements of the periodic table. We know
how difficult it is rote learn the table, because of all the different types
of weird notations and names involved. So Edcoogle is here with a
comprehensive guide on learning the periodic table using tried and

MNEMONICS General method used even at universities to learn all

Mnemonics are easy-to-remember memory devices, generally lines or


phrases, that help learners memorize things that are difficult to learn.
Mnemonics have been scientifically proven to increase memory
retention. A study by Gerald R. Miller found that students who regularly
used mnemonic devices increased their test scores up to 77%! In this
article, we present mnemonics for all groups and periods to learn
the periodic table. Part 2 of this series will describe some other mental
tools, to help you remember these elements.

Before we start, we would like to give you a quick overview of what the
periodic table is-

The Periodic Table is a chart which arranges the chemical elements in a


useful, logical manner. The table is divided into groups (also called
columns) and rows (also called periods). The elements are lined up so
that those which exhibit similar properties are arranged in the same
row or column as each other.

school related topics, this is more than enough. However, if you want
to learn elements by group, below are some funny mnemonics that you
will find easy to memorize :

Group 13 is known as Boron group or the group of Icosagens or Triels.


The elements in this group are Boron (B), Aluminium (Al), Gallium (Ga),
Indium (In), and Thallium (Tl).

Group 14 is known as Carbon group or the group of Tetragens or


Tetrels. The elements in this group are Carbon (C), Silicon (Si),
Germanium (Ge), Tin (Sn), and Lead (Pb).

Group 15 is known as the group of Pnictogens or Nitrogen group. The


elements in this group are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As),
