Salutations to Shrinivasa, the Lord of Venkata Hills, Who is of wonderful auspicious Form and
Who grants the rightful wishes of His devotees!

Shri Shrinivaasa Kalyaanam ceremony

at SSVT on August 29th 2015
Shrinivaasa Kalyaanam is celebrated at SSVT for
the welfare and well-being of the entire world. The
Divine Wedding of a male Form of Ishwara (Lord) with
His feminine Shakti : Narayana with Lakshmi as
Venkateswara and Shridevi Bhudevi; Sri Rama with
Sita; Shiva with Paarvathi as Sundareswara and
Meenakshi is an ever auspicious event. For the
sustenance of the universe, the Divine Couple remain in
the cosmic process of Shobhanam : auspicious union.
Shastras have adapted this perennial process as a
Wedding Event that establishes kalyanam, kshemam
and mangalam in the communities. Bhavishyottara
Purana narrates the original event of Shrinivasa
Kalyanam. The ritualistic procedures of this celebration
are outlined in the texts of Pancharatra agama. For
our own spiritual growth, the right mindset for us is
to imagine with Bhakti that a) this Kalyaanam as our
own family wedding event and b) we belong to the
sacred families of the Groom and the Brides - Lord
Venkateswara, the Mothers Shridevi and Bhoodevi.

snanam. The priests (on behalf of the Groom) recite
three mantras which invoke Soma, Gandharva and
Agni representing strength, beauty, and youth. Next,
the Brides are adorned with colorful wedding clothes
a dharbha rope is tied around the murthy-s of Devis.
12. Aabharana pradhaanam
The Mothers are adorned with beautiful gold and
silver jewels. Mahalakshmi has been already
described as suvarna rajathasrajaam in the veda
sukta meaning One who is adorned with gold and
silver. Here, the gold represents tapo-agni or inner
fervor and silver, aananda or the Bliss resulting
from such a tapas. In this wedding event, we offer
both our efforts and their fruits to the Mothers.
13. Mahaa Sankalpam
A detailed sankalpam (determined vow) is made by
the priests on behalf of the Brides and the Groom.
The devotees make the sankalpam to be part of this
Thiru Kalyanam being conducted for the well-being
of the community and their own families.
14. Kanyaa Daanam
Traditionally, the father of the bride gives away his
precious kanya (daughter) or the Bride to the groom
as daanam with a coconut in hand and water. In this
Divine Wedding, everything belongs to the Groom
and the Brides, and hence there is no receiver or

giver. But for the sake of leela or play, priests give

away Shridevi and Bhoodevi to the Lord with Veda
mantras and water.
15. Mangalaashataka and Choornika paTanam
The name of the Lord or devara naama is considered
to be all purifying and redeeming for the ordinary
mortals. But for the Lord, which words can be used
to make the event more auspicious? His own glory is
sung in a sloka made of eight verses to mark the
occasion.
16. Guda jeeraka pradanam
In this step, cumin seeds and jaggery mixture is
applied to the heads of the murthy-s. This is usually
done to indicate a bride and her groom are united in
bitter (like cumin) and sweet (as jaggery) moments
of life. This also marks the beginning of muhurtham
for the climactic maangalya dhaaranam.
17. Maangalya puja and dhaaranam**
** Offer kumkum and turmeric powder to the
mangalyam while chanting the Lakshmi
Ashtotram.** The devotees symbolically offer the
mangala sutra on their plates to the Holy Feet of Shri
Venkateswara, Shridevi and Bhoodevi. Archana is
done for Lakshmi invoked in the maangalyam on
your plate.

Grooms utthareeyam or male upper cloth are tied.

goes around the sacred Fire or Agni who is the godly
Witness to their union.

followed by naivedyam or offering of edible
preparations.

adorned on Shridevi and Bhoodevi with the recitation
of the following verse:

21. Veda, Upanishad, puraana, prabandha seva and
