Transport Phenomena II Instructor

This document outlines the syllabus for the Transport Phenomena II course taught by Professor Isamu Kusaka in Fall 2014. The class will meet Monday through Thursday from 5:20-6:15pm in room MQ 264. There will be 8 homework assignments, 3 midterm exams, and a final exam. Homework assignments can be worked on collaboratively but must be completed individually. Late homework will receive half credit if submitted within 24 hours of the deadline. The course will cover topics related to mass and heat transfer including equations of continuity, heat transfer with and without motion/work, heat exchanger design, mass transfer, and multicomponent systems.

Textbook (Recommended)
R. Byron Bird, Warren E. Stewart, and Edwin N. Lightfoot, Transport phenomena, 2nd Edition,
John Wiley & Sons, Inc. NY (2002). A list of suggested reading will be posted on Carmen and
updated throughout the semester.

Homework
Currently, eight assignments are planned. Each assignment should be submitted before the class
starts on the day it is due. Due date for each assignment will be announced in class. The ocial
rules for the homework are as follows:
1. Format: Use 8.5in11in paper and, to make the grading easier, WRITE ONLY ON ONE
SIDE. Whatever you write on the other side may not be graded.
2. Collaboration: Collaboration among students are permitted and even encouraged. However,
the work you turn in must be the product of your own. That is, after you work out
the solution together, take a time alone to think and write up the solution on your own. As
you do so, be certain that you know what you are doing and why you are doing it. This is
how you learn the materials.
3. Late assignment: I will accept a late assignment without a penalty provided that you make
a prior arrangement with me at least 48hrs in advance of the deadline. A late assignment
without such an arrangement will receive 50% reduction of the grade and will not be accepted
after 24 hrs of the deadline.

4. Academic misconduct: Never consult the solution set, whether it is from this or the
previous years, before you submit your work. If you ever get caught violating this rule, I am
obligated to report the incident to the university and a procedure painful to both you and
me will ensue. Moreover, if you mostly copy the solution, you wont learn the material as
deeply as you need to and will suer tremendously in the exams. So, do not. Instead, seek
help from the TAs and/or myself to complete the work.

Exams
Exams are given in class with closed notes and books. You may bring a single hand written cheat
sheet to the exam. The sheet should be no larger than 8.5in11in in dimension. Feel free to use
both sides of the paper.

Evaluation
Final grades will be based on the components listed.
