ENGL 1101: Murder in American Culture

Dr. Dean-Ruzicka
Infographic Assignment
Basic Assignment
You will each create an infographic to visually represent the data you
acquired in your group project. An infograpic is not merely a chart or graph,
but instead a visual presentation of research that youve done. You will be
researching the use of a forensic science/technology is crime solving, the
way it is presented to the public, and how it is used in popular culture. You
will present the research that youve done in infographic form.
Infographics
What is an infographic? Two good websites to consult are
http://dailyinfographic.com/ & http://www.informationisbeautiful.net where
you will find a variety of topics covered. Some other examples are:

Remember, this is a visual representation of data. Consider what type of

background/font/graphics the author has used to supply us with this
information, and how the images match the content. Use the WOVENText to
help you, particularly the sections on Alignment, Chunking, Contrast,
Consistency, & Tension.
Tools
There are multiple online tools to help you create an infographic, including
those listed at this link: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/awesome-free-toolsinfographics. (Some of these will help you with just portions of data
visualization.) You will also need to take advantage of the multimedia studio
at the library as well as their oversize printer. (Some) web options for
making infographics:

Non-web options

Adobe InDesign
Tips
There are some good tips covered in the WOVENText on visual
communication. However, some basic things to keep in mind are (thanks to
Alison Valk, multimedia librarian at Georgia Tech):
Keep it simple! Dont try to do too much in one picture.
Decide on a color scheme.
Research good statistics and facts to include.
Think of it as a visual essaymeaning you have a main idea and
supporting points.
Remember its all about quickly conveying meaning about complex
ideas.
Reference facts in infographic to improve your credibility.
Primary Criteria for Evaluation:
Criterion #1 Rhetorical Awareness

Your infographic must take into account the purpose, audience, and context
of your communication situation. Your purpose is to inform your audience
about forensic technology and popular culture. Here, your audience is the
Georgia Tech community. You can assume familiarity with the basics of
American culture and popular culture in your audience. The best
infographics may be chosen for a display of student work in the Hall Building
or Skiles Classroom Building.
Criterion #2Stance and Support
Your final infographic must have a clear main idea and use substantial
supporting data that clearly connect to your main idea. You must think
creatively about how you want to organize and present that information to
your audience. Supporting points for this assignment will be drawn from the
research you did in your annotated bibliography, although you may need to
seek out more sources. You need to cite your sources on the infographic
itself, following conventions of infographic design.
Criterion #3Organization
You need to choose a logical organizational structure for presenting your
data. There are multiple examples of how to do this, please look at a variety
of examples to see how this is done. Some possibilities are timelines, use of
(often multiple) charts or graphs, text analysis via wordle.com, bulleted lists,
etc. Organization must lead us through your main idea through visual
presentation of data. You should organize your oral presentation to include
all group members and make sure you can clearly explain the logic behind
your choices on the infographic.
Criterion #4Conventions
You must follow the conventions for visual communication put forth in the
WOVENText. Make sure youre familiar with the concepts listed in section
6.85 and 6.89-92, as they will factor in towards your grade on this rubric
category. You should also follow conventions for use of language and citation
that one finds on infographics. Looking at examples, such as those found on
http://dailyinfographic.com/ & http://www.informationisbeautiful.net will help
you with this task.
Criterion #5Design for Medium
Design will be heavily weighted in this assignment. You need to choose a
clear, consistent format for your infographic. Data must clearly be displayed,

the main idea should be obvious, and sources should be evident. Think
about font choices, color schemes, types of data representation, and decide
what will be the most appropriate for your particular poster.
