Conductingcounselingsessionswiththesupportandfeedbackofothersisanimportantpartofatrainee's
professionaldevelopment.Inmosttrainingprogramssessionsarerecordedoneitheraudioorvideotape.Oncea
sessioniscompleted,thetraineelistenstotherecording,providinghim/herselfwithfeedbackthatcanleadto
ideasforfuturesessionsandrecognitionofareasinwhichone'sworkcanbeimproved.Advancedcounselors,as
wellastrainees,listentodevelopafullpictureofwhathappenedinthesession:importantclientemotions,
beliefs,andpersonalitycharacteristicsnotfullyseenduringtheactualsession,significantmomentsorturning
points,andsignificantthingsthecounselordidordidnotdo.Receivingorganizedfeedbackfromthesupervisor
andgivingorganizedfeedbacktooneselfaremajorvehiclesbothforimprovingone'sworkwithagivenclient
andforbuildingone'sprofessionalskills.

Thefollowingoutlineisofferedasanaidtoproducingawrittenanalysisofacounselingsession,
especiallyonethathasbeenrecorded.Usedcarefully,theoutlinecanhelpthetraineeorganizethoughtsaboutthe
